The term "woodie" refers to a pattern that appears on the planchets. It gives the coin a "woodgrain" look. Here is a whole thread dedicated to "woodies" with a lot of nice examples. http://www.cointalk.com/t65353/
You can get all kinds of patterns to the grain. Here is one I particularly like and another interesting pattern.
