    Something to Ponder

Since I collect my birthyear (1935) silver coins of the world and obtained the USA PDS minted Mercury Dimes, Washington Quarters and Walking Liberty Half Dollars plus the PS Peace Dollars within a few weeks after my decision, I decided, last year, to acquire a 1935-P Cent and a few PDS Buffalo Nickels.

While searching for something numismatically important enough to share with other numismatists a discovery puzzled me...

Take a look at this obverse of a 1935-P Cent (photo courtesy of Coin Page):

Now look at the obverse of this 2002-S Cent (Coin Page photo):

Whose beard is on Lincoln's face featured on the 2002-S Cent?

Research shows the beard portrayed on the 1935 Cent is the one Victor David Brenner designed and it is the one on all Cents from 1909 through 1983. The one shown on the 2002-S Cent is a modified version which first appeared on the 1984 PDS Cents.

Hope you enjoyed "Pondering" with me.

I'm glad the 2010's went back to the original Victor David Brenner design . I never liked the new beard.

That's the problem with a lot of artists. They believe that "artistic license" is spelled.......

    Hi ratpack7:

Good to hear from you, There is one year that Lincoln's hair was changed, but too many complaints forced at return to the original.

    Hi cpm9ball:

Ego is usually the culprit, but often things are changed in the numismatic world to enhance the image, word, phrase, letter, etc. Some changes are accepted, some not.

Yep, I didn't like the pointy new beard....that point in front looked funny to me.

When you compare the 2010 image with the 2009, there's simply no question as to which is better.
