It is pretty obvious that people just don't take the time to research before they bid. Do people still believe what they read in a posting as the gospel? This auction is a good example of how a well written auction listing can get bidders to part with their money. Another fine use of the word "RARE". I'm going to have to watch this one. With a 8 hrs. to go and 13 bids already I don't think they're done yet. http://cgi.ebay.com/2005-Ocean-In-View-First-Day-Nickel-Cover-Sealed_W0QQitemZ8394511476QQcategoryZ41089QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Edited to pull my foot out of my mouth again.
Here's another. 10 bids on these so far. If ebay is a good source for secondary market values, then my stuff just went up a bundle! http://cgi.ebay.com/First-Day-Nickel-Coin-Covers-2004-2005-SET-OF-4-NR_W0QQitemZ8393182449QQcategoryZ41089QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
See, I fall into that category! Still way too much for items that aren't very popular with collectors and did not sell out. I shouldn't complain though, I may want to sell my sets someday and that's the kind of market I want to see.
To me, I see nothing wrong with the ebay listing. I agree that I wouldn't buy these coins either at these prices, but it is true that a lot of items that weren't popular at the time later become emensely popular and expensive. He's not misrepresenting anything here, IMO. Just peddling it. Ruben
I agree, no misrepresentation intentionally. Maybe just a little "stretching" with his big red "sold out" and "23,000 produced". If I remember correctly, these as well as the other 3 were still available up to 12/31 (no sell outs) and the production number was closer to 50,000 (maybe only 23,000 sold). Just another example of how the word "rare" can be used to hype and manipulate buyers into overspending. 4 pc. set ended with a winning bid of $191
If ebay is a good source for secondary market values, then my stuff just went up a bundle!
Sure it did - as long as you only look at the highest realized prices. But you better not look at all those others that sold for far less. Like these - 2004 FDC - $7.51 HERE 2005 FDC - $15 HERE That kinda puts a different light on things. You need to keep in mind when trying to assess current values - it's not the highest prices or the lowest prices that provides guidelines - it's the average prices
Looks like these mint issued WJ first day covers might be catching on. Doug, I think the average is going to jump a little if this keeps up. 3 days remaining - $56 1 day remaining - $51 1 day remaining - $31.14 3 days remaining - $31.14
What is the link you use to see the realized histories again on auctions? I was looking up and down for it on ebay yesterday. Ruben
on any search page, just look in the left hand column of the page entitled "search options" and one of the little checkable boxes will be "Completed listings". Just click on the box and then hit the search button to view only the ended auctions. Or you could just click this link.
Having intrigued my own curiosity and to put a pretty accurate value on what's in my inventory, I went back and looked over the last 10 auctions and watched the ones ending this past week. Throwing out the highest and the lowest winning bids this is the average price I came up with for the mint issued WJ first day covers. '04 Peace Medal nickels - $37.20, '04 Keelboat nickels - $44.20, '05 Bison nickels - $21.00, '05 Ocean in View nickels - $97.25, (As a set of 4) - $182.62, Sac dollar FDC - $54.00. That's a pretty nice little increase in such a short time for items that, when available at the mint, didn't seem to draw much interest. I hope this trend continues.
Hopefully these bidders are not the poor un-educated public but fools with money , maybe a little less of it in the future , or maybe they're smarter than all of us. Only in America.
Speaking of the uneducated people on eBay... Have a laugh at this 1871 AU65 Trade dollar! You too could own this super rare FAKE coin!
More laughter at ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/COINS-US-SILVER...416281091QQcategoryZ41092QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I think this is the almost same thing available for 30 bucks: Should get it and put it on ebay, I guess. Would they know the diff? http://www.unicover.com/EE5TFAUI.HTM
