Is there a known mule for the obv of an Japanese 1876 trade dollar(Y14) with a One yen Rev? Weight 24.6 grams I am guesing this is some sort of fake
The correct weight of a trade dollar is 27.22 grams, and a yen is 26.9568. The weight difference is the difference between 416 grains (yen) and 420 grains (TD). Neither the Japanese Numismatic Dealer's Association catalog, nor any other recognized reference book, mentions such a mule. The most common place to find them on EBay is in auctions by Chinese sellers.
Of course it's possible! All you need is dies like this: and all the combinations of 1 yen obverse and reverse and trade dollar obverse and reverse dies to mess around with, and tada! Idiot people who made such coins have no idea which pair goes together or probably to create some novelty. Brilliant indeed, but let's hope you don't fall for such coins.
Japan is not my forte,came with a group of coins I bought for others in the lot,ahh kinda interesting though. In the same lot were a set of 1972 Spain proofs(loose) 1,5,25,50 Pesetas and a canada 1892 50cent piece KM#6 along with some other items put me way ahead of the game,I am happy overall Thanks for the feedback----Ed
Ed,the Canadian 50c. coin is a very good coin.All of the silver Canadian 50c. of Queen Victoria are very difficult to find,hence their high catalogue value. Aidan.
