I came into a 1895 Morgan that I took some detailed photos of. I weighted it and it came in at 26.00 first of all. Other than that it looks great. Can anyone help determine if this is a fake please. I have included two of the pictures for your viewing, please let me know what you think. Thank you
There are only a few known 1895 Morgan dollars, and all of them are proofs, but yours does not appear to be a proof. Therefore, there is a good chance that your coin is not genuine.
1895 proof? And you're asking if it's real or fake? Sorry...I don't mean to insult...but let's just say if you paid less than $30,000 for it then it is not authentic. Try a magnet? Lance.
Here's some help on counterfeit Morgan Dollars I would like to point out a couple aspects of your 1895. It could be 90% silver, weigh the correct weight, and still be counterfeit. Also, one look at the 5 in the date is enough to prove it's counterfeit. Compare it to authentic 1885, 1895-S and 1895-O Morgan Dollars and you can tell that the font is not correct.
With a non-slabbed 1895 Morgan, the assumption going in is that it must be a fake until authenticated by a major TPG. There were less than 1000 minted, those were proofs. Current retail on those coins is 'thirty large' and up.
Man did you get taken for a ride. It's a fake. 26.00, way too light for normal wear, most 1895s are slabbed as there are not many known to exist and the ones that do, are proofs.
