Wondering what happened to these odd coins I found in my collection. 1968 Kennedy Half 1974 Kennedy Half Finally a 1874 Cent. I also was wondering, because I have a slew of these, what does a mark of 2 1/2, 3 1/2 or 4 followed by a diamond symbol mean?
Can you point to what you think are errors on your coins? (The photo of the IHC is too dark to see any details.) That refers to the number of diamonds on the ribbon Liberty (the "Indian") is wearing. A certain number of diamonds must be present to achieve a certain grade.
I tried to "draw" some attention to the areas of question on my photobucket, sometimes the changes I made to the photo dont show up right away. The 68 area is circled, the 74 area is pointed at by an arrow and the IHC has a line drawn across it. The area above the line is what I am questioning. Thanks for the diamond tip. Is 4 as high as can be found? I have a few 4s.

Lamination error huh? I will have to go read up on that. Someone had told me the 1974 was a planchet error, the planchet had bubble or something, I just wanted to get a second opinion. Thanks for you help again. You will be hearing quite a bit from me as I search through all these old coins. Got my red book yesterday in the mail. VERY VERY HELPFUL. Helped me figure out I have a 3rd reverse 1879 S Morgan. I never would have found such a detail.
I am not entirely sure how rockdude is able to distinguish that alteration on the surface as a mint error. Even though it may look like a laminations viewing these poor quality photos, there are many other things it may be; It could just be a dig or a deep surface scratch. Judging by these photos I, myself, cannot say for certain that it is an obverse lamination. Rockdude? You have come to the conclusion that it is a lamination. How is this? Do you have a super high resolution setting and have inhanced the quality of the photo yourself? Toddary, I am basicly saying don't get your hopes up. Now if I had the coin in hand, I would be able to diagnose in a split second the problem. -Brian
The IHC is so heavily circulated that it is impossible to tell what caused it. Judging from the very slight color difference, I'd lean toward PMD. As for the others, PMD too! Chris
I agree that the pix of the IHC aren't clear enough for a proper determination of the error, if any. But after just looking through 200+ IHCs I'd go with a lamination error. It's really common. I will probably see these things in my dreams tonight...residual haunting!! The two Kennedys are PM.
All I can do is post a larger scan, I am terrible at photography and dont have much in terms of a camera. Here is a bigger one. Hope it helps a little.
