Icelandbank owns a huge collection of rare notes,

These notes came from four older banks who joined together years ago.

The collection curator tried last week to sell some of these notes to a dealer here in Iceland. But what he didnt know was that the note is only known to exist in 5 samples.

So the dealer called the central bank and checked the serial and whollah the police got involved. And the man was arrested when he tried to sell it to the dealer.

It´s a 1903 100 Kronur P#13 wich has no price in Krause. Estemate price would be about 15-30 thousand dollars.

The moral to the story, DO YOUR HOMEWORK !!!!!!!! and dont be stupit

Interesting story, thanks for posting it! (And for providing an English abstract - I tried to get the pressan.is article translated into German and English using Google Translate, but ... oh well.) What I don't quite understand - wouldn't such a curator know about the notes being so rare?

(Side note: Had he done his homework, he might have tried selling different notes instead. So no, be dumb and get caught! :) )

    Thanks Christian,

Iclandic google translation does not work as Icelandic has many stranges rules when it comes to bending words and grammar ect.

I actually agree with you about selling different notes, That one seems to be the only one that was very rare and an eye opener to the dealer. But because of the stupitity no one other then the curator got burned.

Would have been a shame if these notes left Iceland

Lesson learned Siggi, but did the curator know they were stolen notes and then tried to sell them to tne dealer? If he didn't know, then he shouldn't have gotten arrested for making a stupid mistake. Granted, he certainly was negligent not having done any research on what he was selling. By the way, how would you say "hello" and "good-bye" in Icelandic Siggi. :smile

He definitely should have been arrested then Siggi. The position of a curator is one of trust, so he should be held to a higher standard.

I love my Iceland,,,,,But sometimes ,, I just don't know where some of them get there brains from ,,,you live on a small Island where 90% of 320,000 people,,, live along the coast and about 40 percent or so live in or around Reyjkavik,,How can you steal something like This rare note and not think you will not get caught,,,it not like here in the U.S. where there is a coin dealer within a 20 mile radius of where ever you are,,,just about. Its like living in a village where eveybody knows you. One time when I was 14 me and a few of my friends broke some old windows 4 maybe 5,, at a abandon fish factory,,,,Well the next day we got a vist from the Keflavik police as well as it made front page,,,,, I guess times have changed in Iceland since I lived there last,,With all the things I have been reading.

They had better take an inventory of the collection and see if anything else is missing. I can't see someone trying to sell such a rare note that would be instantly recognized unless he had already plundered the collection of the lessor rarities and he has no choice but to either quit or move to the high rarity pieces.
