I picked up this token today since I'd never seen something like this before. One side says "Iceland Base Exchange" and the other says "Trade Value 5 Cents Club Currency. Use in U.S. Forbidden." Has anyone ever seen this before? My guess is that it is for some business on a U.S. military base in Iceland, but I have no idea of the year or anything else.
This is just a stab in the dark but I know there is a US military base in Iceland. It's probably a token from that base from back in the 40's during WWII. If Siggi or Iceman57 see this post they will be able to confirm it and tell you alot more about it. Nice find by the way Thanks for posting it! Mark in NJ
I didn't think it looked especially old but one thing that does argue for it being older is that it's worth 5 cents, and that doesn't buy much nowadays but would have bought a candy bar or a soda at least in the 40s or 50s.

This is a military token from the US Keflavik base witch was Inactivated 28th of June 2006 More info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Air_Station_Keflavik This token would have been made from 1951-1960 - Used in the messhall, clubs and vending machines ect. There arent a whole lot of these around so it´s a good pickup Prices range from 10-30 dollars depending on condition. They go on aucitons in Iceland for about the same price. Siggi
When I was a kid in Iceland i knew this American kid that told me that the 5 Aurar coin would work in the vending machines at the Nato base in Keflavik as a quarter,,,So I would go to a local bank and get as many 5 Aurar coins I could find,,it took 100 Aurar to make a penny and then him and I would raid all the candy machines we could find,,,and the candy was only 10 cents and we would get 15 cents back ,,,its was much better then using one of those tokens. I wonder if the 5 Aurar would still work in the machines today,,,I have a bunch of them.
Wow, that's a lot better than I expected. I paid 20 cents for it and I'm lucky I noticed it because I don't usually look at tokens when I come across them while searching through the value bin.
can you get me one siggi, i collect military token coinage and i would certainly like one of those.........
Sure, I have my own collection but I can let you know when one of those or any other turns up. Just give me a PM with your email and I'll give you a shout when it turns up
