So, I have found a dealer on eBay who has a coin I am really interested in. For quite some time, I have been looking for a nice example of a Third Reich military occupation coinage piece. They can be hard to find in high grade. Well, here is a 1940-A 10pf that is listed as UNC...and I have never seen a nicer one in photographs. I am really tempted to purchase it. The price is $150. What do you think:

The coin, indeed, might be UNC, but there are some obvious stains on it. I would imagine that $150 would be a price for some amazing looking BU/MS66+.

I got mine (10 rp. 1940A) for $30, it got the usual dark patina and seems UNC. The 5 rp. was a different story, had to pay $50 for UNC (I think it was a very good deal, took some effort and time to get it). Got both on eBay BTW.

Personally, I don't think the coin on the picture is worth this amount, I`d say $80 top, which is the maximum price for raw 1940A coin in any higher grade.

*Just checked eBay, there were way more options when I bought it few months ago. Now only a couple of sellers are offering it.

I appreciate the advice. I spoke today with a very prominent German coin dealer and he told me he really liked the coin...and the only reason he wasn't going to purchase it is because he wouldn't bid against me. So, I did purchase it. I know it's a little on the spendy side, but it is a choice example.

Funny how it seems to breathe menace, even just in a photograph.

Seems an exceptional piece for a coin made of cheap material at such at moment in history.

I had the same thoughts. I have always thought these were among the most errie coins ever minted. They just make your stomach turn a little. I have never seen one in nicer shape than this one, that is why I bought. I know I paid a lot for it, but I really believe it to be a very exceptional piece.

You bought a coin that moves you and with eyes wide open about the price you paid. Unless you spent the butter and egg money, you've no need to second-guess yourself.

That's why we're collectors - to experience those feelings.

It was money I got at Christmas and had been saving for the right thing to come along...and this was it. I wouldn't have purchased it if I hadn't shown it to a German coin dealer whom I really trust. He felt it was a coin I would be very happy with and promised not to bid against me. I can't wait for it to arrive.
