Stay on the public sidewalk close to the driveway entrance with a sign warning that you were offered a small fraction of what your coins were actually worth. That way you can't be charged with trespass and your sign relates your own personal experience rather than a general statement that might get you charged with slander. (Of course you may still have a bit of a problem in that they may deny that they lowballed you and claim that they offered much more and you turned it down.)

That's so funny I found a starnote error and put it on here to find out what I had and I got told everything from $70 up but most of the people were below 200 and these were guys on this site with 1000's of post and some of the messages were so insulting like I didn't deserve to be on they're site with my dollar. I won't put anyone on blast but alot of the guys are ebay dealers and since that time of gotten a couple steals from they're auctions just for the **** of it.

Some states have "one party" consent for video taping and wire tapping.

Too bad you weren't wearing a wire and weren't video taping the whole incident.

    This "company" have a website?

Great post. I really like the idea of passing out copies of price guides in the parking lot. You'd think, in this day of the internet and all sorts of free information, people would at least spend some time looking up this stuff. It boggles the mind how truly lazy some people are. If I have something that I want to sell, I check various venues for a value before I attempt to sell it.

Not sure if you all have read this story, but check this out:

Very worthwhile read and it's another one of those stories were a local man fights back against this crooks.

I figured you were a Michigander when you said you strolled in there with a meijer bag.
    Howdy neighbor!
I work at a Marriott (doing A/V), and we've had gold buyers in before. Sure, it's a reputable hotel, but business is business. This type of client is well liked, because they just pay room rental, and don't need food, A/V, or anything. Just tables and chairs. You really don't even need any employees on site for them, so it's easy money for the hotel. I've made sure to tell servers and such that it's a rip off, but other than that, I just go about my business.

Great story! Me and 7 dealers have already booked the motel across the street for when they come back! The dealer in town here retired from the Saginaw News in 1964 to start his coin business that is still up and running. Needless to say he has connections in the news and that week they are coming back all of the ads have been purchased! :D

I think these "hotel buyers" and pawn shops operate on the assumption, anyone who comes to them is desperate or has stolen items. In either case, they believe (rightfully so) these people are stupid, as they would not have gotten themselves into financial difficulty or stole items and come to them, if they were not.

I'd say you would have a good case against them if you could get something in writing from them or record their conversation with you, listing your coins and their offer, especially if the offer was a couple bucks for a certified gold piece that they told you was fake. I'd take their offer to the government agency investigating them.

You know that's right. Maybe the way to protect the local people is to get the licensing and taxing agencies involved. The police and local governments usually have laws on the books that items have to be held for weeks before ownership passes. There probably is a great deal of stolen property involved since some thieves would know better than to take a prominent collection into a legitimate business.

Just making these clowns obey all the laws should be sufficient to slow them down a lot.

There are laws against fraud. Allowing out of town buyers to walk away with much of the local wealth is not a good way to run a city. There must be some authority who'd care.

Another player just hit town with a two page advertisement in today's (Sunday) paper. They'll be in two different locations each day, starting Tuesday and continuing through the following Monday. So, they'll cover every section of town at 14 different sites. Sponsored by the Crescent Military Collection, Crescent Jewelers, Fremont Ohio.

Their ad does state, "All prices are based on condition and rarity - Do not clean, Polish or Sharpen any of the items"

Legit? Who knows. There's no indication that they're associated with TRH, but the ads look like all the others.

Kudos to you. I see ads for the scamsters in our paper. The large Coin Gallery runs counter ads at the same time.

I just got an advertisement in the mail about a day or so ago from someone called ICCA (International Coin Collectors Association) announcing that they are going to be in my city starting on Tuesday (May 24) and will be there until May 28 (Saturday) and will buy gold, silver, paper money and jewelry among other things. The MO is the same in that they will be in a hotel right off the interstate. I do not know if they are the same company that the OP went to but I am not planning to go since I do not have anything to sell to them. I suspect that ICCA will just rip people off just like the company that the OP was talking about. The ICCA is probably no different than the local pawn shops in my area. I see them as a "traveling pawn shop" that will probably rip people off through out their travels around the U.S. All of this seems very suspicious to me. All I have to say is this......................Buyer beware........I guess I should say seller beware.

Again this company is called ICCA (International Coin Collectors Association). This is just a heads-up to everybody on CoinTalk.
