I am looking for a Nero Denarius help. I went through what is on Vcoins. I found a few. They run all over the place on price. Silver content, conditoin all the regular factors. But from what I can see, nice examples but not high end ones run from 100 to 300 USD. I was looking at these two. Thanks for any advice.

They are both nice coins - but yes very expensive.

If you are patient you are likely to get a much better deal at auction:
    https://www.biddr.com

Don't forget to factor in currency conversion, shipping and buyers fee when bidding. Read the auction terms

I agree with above. Patience is the key. Scan upcoming auctions. VCoins dealers often have some nice looking coins but it is a fixed price system.

Thanks. I will take some time and do a bit of searching on that link site.

If you want another place to search for fixed price offerings, don't forget the big European counterpart to VCoins: M-A Shops.

The IVPPITER CVSTOS one is nice, all inscriptions are readable, the style is very good, and the price tag is relatively affordable (for a denarius of Nero).

I agree. There's no contest between the two, in my opinion. That one has nicer surfaces and a lower pricetag and, to me, better eye appeal than the SALVS.

And I'm not just saying that because my one-and-only Nero also happens to be a IVPPITER CVSTOS.

I agree as well - however I would hold out for one that has the "NERO" very legible for that price.

I do not own a Nero denarius

Good point. Having the full name on the flan is right up there with having a nice portrait.

Kind of shocked by the prices myself. Maybe because I spend more time in auctions. I own a few just like this, but got them in group lots over the years and never allocated very much money at all to them in the lot. I own a couple of nicer ones. Sorry, usually not a snob, but a VG Nero denarius without NERO showing doesn't justify that kind of money, but maybe I am out of date.

I went through the auctions provided in the link. Nothing as good or priced close to the one in vcoins. I will keep looking. I would really like one that has a readable Nero and Caesar. So far that is not so easy to find under 400 dollars. But I am in no hurry.

If no hurry I echo everyone's suggestion. Numisbids or Biddr have tons of auction websites. I find it good to chase some coins over time. Makes the acquisition all the more sweet.

I do like that first Nero denarius - it's got a decent, though worn, portrait, and a nice reverse. The surfaces look nice too.

Having said that, if you're in no hurry, it might pay to hold off and keep looking. Auctions are happening all the time, and chances are if you're patient you'll find a better deal.

And of course, the longer you wait the more time you'll have to save up, so you might be able to get an even nicer one.

I would agree with the consensus - best to check auctions (you can go through SixBid or Biddr to compare many auctions at once) to see what is out there. In the recent past, you should have been able to get a decent quality Nero for $150-200 or so, but maybe I'm behind the times - I have not been keeping up with more recent prices on these, unfortunately.

One just sold at CNG today for 200(+40 for juice, I guess).

I see some asking insane prices for shipping a coin. One places was asking 57 dollars shipping on one Denarius coin. I repair and sell 1920s and 30s desk fans. I get that for a 20 pound fan shipped cont. USA. I can not imagine a reason other than milking a bit of money out of a buyer for this. Even insurance is only a few dollars.

Probably shipping from outside the US.

Very much so. I believe shipping is free with NN if you win 200 Euro or something, so maybe look there as a suggestion, (I have no relationship with seller). Just a suggestion. You are very smart paying attention to commissions and shipping rates. I won one coin for 40 euro at an auction, (underbidder on like 12 other lots), and told seller to just keep it until I win more. I am money ahead if I never receive the coin than pay the shipping for just one cheap coin.

I would recommend Ken Dorney on Vcoins, he’s always been really good to me!

Maybe sticking my neck out here, not too much of an ancients guy but...a denarius is great if that's what you want, but would you consider a tetradrachm of Nero? Bigger coin and lots of them around. Check mashops.
