What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 reverses of a Franklin half dollar? I saw it on a list of the magazine COINS... i think.:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

Not familiar with that term either (regarding Franklins). Seen it on a host o' other issues though. Perhaps we shall be enlightened? :)

I believe they refer to how the eagle to the right of the Liberty Bell appears. Type I has less details in things like the feathers and the talons, while Type II has more detail. This was found on the 1956 proof issue.

Are type I and type ll details visible/available on all issues of Franklins?

From my understanding, type 1 and 2 are in reverence to circulation strikes, most typically 1958 and 1959 (though there are other dates claiming the variety such as 1956.) Easiest way to tell a type I business strike from a type II is to count the feather tips on the left side of the eagle. Type I has 4 tips while type II has 3. The reason for this difference is because the mint decided to utilize proof dies on the business strikes when the regular dies became to worn to utilize (at least that's my understanding.) If you want a complete read, I would recommend two sources: google "complete guide to franklin halves" and click on the link sponsored by Stella. Another source would be this thread created by one of our own: http://www.cointalk.com/t72184/

1958 and 1959 P are the most sought, though I hear there are other dates. The big issue is that they are on business strikes. I think all proofs have the Type II reverse regardless of year, but I could be wrong as I don't collect proofs.

Type II was first used on part of the 1956 proofs and all proofs thereafter. Previous proofs were type I. The only circulation strike II's are part of the 1958 (P) and 1959 (P)
mintages. The only date/mint combos with varieties are the 1956 Proof and the 1958 and 1959 circulation strikes.

  10. Here is a pic of my recently acquired 1958 Type II Franklin, which took me well over a year to find. I have found plenty of 1959 Type II Franklins in Mint Sets though. TC

It's a proof after 1956 so it would have to be type II.

Well, Jello, I think you just opened my eyes a little. I had no idea type 1's were found after 1956 for proofs. But, then again, I don't collect proofs prior to SF mint production. Couple of questions, do you have a reference I can read up on these proof type I's after 1956? Secondly, you may have to update me on some of the terminology as I'm not hip with professional grading company terms. What's a pop #?

These are new to me, too. Where are these pop numbers? What TPG service graded them? Can you point us to any references to them?
