Here is a 1880-S Morgan dollar I picked up. I am sure it was dipped. Do you think ANACS will give it the "cleaned" designation, or not note the cleaning?

Does it show hairlines...if not I see no reason why they wouldn't grade it....most Morgans have been dipped at one point in time.

I think it looks great. MS-73/74 at least.

It doesn't have hairlines, but it looks like the mirror surfaces are a little pitted.

It has a big bagmark/gash near the date, that should limit it to a MS-61/62.

I agree, especially on the reverse. And that's probably why the coin was dipped - to remove whatever was causing the corrosion.

I don't know how ANACS is going to grade things like this now, but it might come back with something like AU Damaged.

If it comes back AU it will be one of the nicest looking circulated coins around.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think for one minute the coin is circulated. My point is that I don't how ANACS will grade these coins now that they have recently changed their policy. They used to say, MS Details - Corroded, Net AU50. But they won't do that anymore. Now, the coin may come back as MS Damaged or it may come back as AU Damaged. I just don't know.

Then-yes...I think it would get the details grade....I just learned last night that ANACS will STILL give a NET grade IF you ask when you send in the coins.

I got this coin back from ANACS today. They graded it PF-63 PL.

That's what I want to know. There is no way that this is a MS-63 either (MS-62 at best).

Is that smeared ink I see?

ANACS has really gone down the tubes.

This is my theory on ANACS right now:

I sent in a coin to get graded and paid for 3 day service. It took seven days just to grade it and 10 days to get it back. I called James Taylor to complain and he told me that they allowed any coin submitted in Oct/Nov/Dec '05 to wait for the new slab. So people decided to wait which led to a huge backlog. My guess is that this backlog led to poor grading and poor customer service. I think Charlie is the former and I am the latter.

I guess if I have learned anything on this site it is buy the coin not the slab.....

Yes, all of them have some of the ink smudged, mostly on the barcode.

If you really think it is silver, you could send it in. Why do you think it is silver?
