Along with buying/selling my ancients and collecting brockages. I want to collect a world coinage: 1. Attractive 2. preferably pre 1800, but I'll consider other options 3. most coins that I'll have to get under $50 even in higher grades 5. NGC slabable 6. of silver color (doesnt have to be silver...I dislike bronze and copper) 7. a decently short series 8. not Phillipenes - don't want a type set 9. something everyone else would drool over 10. Something that isn't collected by everyone 11. preferably something that doesn't show a giant portrait of a certain person (I like the hammered or medieval coinage look...something along those lines I guess..lol) 12. It has to be possible to complete. No super rare/expensive coin that will keep me from completing the series until I hit a jackpot. Any ideas? stainless
There's quite a few swiss sets in the ngc registry that have 0 sets. I'm not sure about the value of most of these, but I don't think they're too expensive. There may be a key or two though in some. and don't do specimen Half Francs, the set can be worth hundreds of thousands *cough*notreallyIjustdontwantcompetition :foot-mouth:*cough* http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/public_sets.aspx?CategoryID=60&sets=world
Thanks for the idea. A little bit more than what my budget consist of, so I'll have to pass on swiss sets. Maybe someday. I'm thinking something hammered/medieval....kinda like Thalers...only cheaper. stainless
Heh, thalers...pricey B($&%. What about lower denominations like my leopold kreuzers and such? Look nice, lots of history, lots of kings/emperors to pick from. Even if its Denars.
I'll look into them. I'm thinkin maybe Hungary denars...the 1500's can be had cheap, and they're what I'm looking for too. Maybe get every year for Fernidad or something. stainless
There are some pretty sweet medals to collect from the pre-1800's. Check this 1 out , it goes on the block 05-18-2011. http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotvi...Lot=2139&Val=c9bab1ee7862e16599afab48e2c380cb
There was a great series of articles on these in the celator a year or two back. I would check with them to see if you can get reprints if you wish to puruse this series. I think its a great series, medieval, old, common enough so they are cheap, yet unresearched enough that most dealers do not know which ones are rare. I have thought about this set too, but I already have a lot of mini collections going. I am working more on my Central Asian right now.
i also collect para-numismatics such as trade tokens, telephone tokens and transport tokens, it's amazing how little these things cost, i bought a heckmondwike cooperative society £1 today for 50p, then there are the 18th century british tokens which rarely go for mega bucks, i have one of the rarest (halsall 1/2 penny) and it is worth around £250.
Yeah, I think I may do these. To be honest I wanted something a little bigger in size, but I'm going to look into them. The madonna w/child series goes on for a while, so I may do one per emperor, or get one silver type coin made in the 1500, like a century type set. I'll come up with something. Still deciding, lol. I'm going to start on vcoins looking at medieval pieces and see which "speak" to me the most. stainless stainless
The pre-1800 requirement is tough. So, I am just going to start typing a list of things and let you decide. Most won't fit into NGC slabs. Military awards/medals Uniforms Hat pins Autographs Ammunition/old bullets Nails Tokens Wampum? Ya know, before 1800, I'm trying to think, what "hobbies" did people have?? Good request. Let us know what you decide!
Yeah, no copper and pre-1800 for less than $50 is tough. Those three factors together greatly limits choices. The only other suggestion would be Spanish colonial reales. I have gotten some of these cheaper, but they also are smaller. Another thought could be Bugarian silver minted between 1200-1500. I have bought groups of them. They are as small as the Hungarian ones, but are interesting because they follow Byzantine types. If you wanted to move into the 1800's, then the field opens up. I like circulated Mexican silver, a Latin America silver type set would be fantastic, just tons of german silver pieces too. Pre 1800 but copper there are a lot of great opportunities as well. I love silver, always have, but also love a nice copper coin. These can be much more substantial than silver pieces for your price range.
I've also been interested in 1800 mexican/central american silver pieces...just don't know enough about them...I wouldn't even know what to type in on ebay when doing a search. lol. the Bugarian pieces sound interesting. I'll look those up too. stainless
