    It's a gold $2.50 coin.
Looks real, but more/clearer pics would be best to authenticate.
They were known as "Quarter Eagles", with a "Half Eagle" being $5.00, and a full "Eagle" being $10.00 coins.
These coins were minted and in circulation right up to the depression era.
Your coin has lost most of it's numismatic value due to having a hole put in it.
It is valueable solely due to it's gold content, and gold value is abnormally high for now.

It's also priceless because it was your Grandfathers , it's got almost an 1/8 oz of gold . I'd treasure it as I do anything given from family , seeing I never met either of my grandfathers , they both died before I was born , It would be worth more than anycoin in my collection . I have a comman date holed larfe cent that was my Dads . I'll never get rid of it .

It's funny you say that... I feel the same about some of my coins.
My father had a 1944 circulated quarter in his little box (like a man's jewelry box) since I ever first looked in it as a child.
He passed, and that ugly old quarter is in my Dansco, surrounded by gems!
