One of my dump banks has a machine that rejects silver. I guess it came from other peoples change.

I know!! If you look on Ebay, you will see folks selling $10 rolls, and people are paying 14-15, plus shipping, for an unsearched roll!! I think we are better off selling the unopened rolls, then buying our silver w/ the profits!! :D

I'm gonna take a stab at what happened here.

Person lists item on ebay. Bidder A really wants it and knows that only an idiot would pay a lot of money for it. So Bidder A puts an automatic bid of $99 assuming it would beat all other offers. Bidder B also really wants it. Bidder B was trying to beat Bidder A for quite a while. As the end time got closer, Bidder B got frustrated. Assuming Bidder A would not pay $100 dollars for it, Bidder B puts up an automatic bid of $100. The rest, as they say, is history.

Not exactly the smartest way to beat out someones auto bid.

I agree with your theory. One would think that people on Ebay understand the term "Maximum bid" meaning the MOST you'd be willing to pay....a fool and his money will soon part :)

Went to dump my change today. I filled up the dime bag, so the guy had to open the machine to replace it. I saw the half dollar bag right in front and sure enough, I could see silver just sparkling at me. I wanted that silver! So I asked him if I could buy the bag. No. Can I search the bag? No. Can I just have one coin and replace it with another half dollar. No. Sorry.

Oh wow...he just locked that silver piece back into the machine as I looked on in dismay. What a horrible feeling. Who's going to get my silver half now?

    :(

Hey, Merc, quick question: exactly what in the CoinStar machines do you check? I check the slot at the bottom where rejects come out, and I've found things there occasionally; I also see the tray under the area where you dump coins in, but that appears to catch only the stuff small enough to fall through the holes (I'm not even sure a trime would make it through). I thought those were the only places to check, but then a cashier mentioned finding foreign coins stuck to the magnet inside, so I think I'm missing something important.

So, is there something you have to pull out of the machine in order to check it? If so, can you do it without alarming the store personnel?

On coinstars? Good question, I don't know... I usually just check the reject slot.

If they're anything like the machines that TD Bank uses (Which I suspect they may be) the unit that you push the coins into will pull out, and if you stick your hand into the lower part where coins slide out, you'll feel coins stuck to a powerful magnet that you can pull off.

I've picked up dozens of steelies doing that, as well as a huge variety of foreign coinage. I'll check out a couple coinstars tomorrow since I'm off work until Wednesday.

The bank I go to has a machine that separates the coins by denomination. When they get full, the tellers pull the bags and put them in the safe. I can only buy them when they are full :( but at least I get the option to buy the bags...

BTW, what bags are best to buy? Dimes, quarters, halves? I am leery about halves b/c most of them are probably mine LOL....suggestions for bag searching?

All clear bags are dated like from wells fargo. dont dump there for awhile and then ask for the most recent ones

Ryan: Awesome score, congrats.....don't you just LOVE that sound when you hear it (especially when the teller doesn't recognize it).

I completely agree with your theory.

Don't you know he had to be SICK when he put in his $100+ bid and it came back with a $100 price tag. LOL. I would have loved to have seen his face.

Of course, I doubt if this guy is going to pay that price. He'll probably make a reasonable offer, and if rejected, just take the hit on his score....

    Weekend Report

I had a great coin weekend. First off, I found a 1943 D steel cent at the coin machine (I posted previously about this). I had never found one before (though I have a bunch from my father), so that was quite a thrill. Then I picked up a couple of boxes of halves

    Box 1: 2 40%ers and 2 1964s

Box 2: What a FUN box due to the variety
    • Many NIFC 2003, 2004 coins. I didn't keep any of them since I just picked up several rolls of these and am still deciding how many to keep
    • 9 BU 1987 NIFC (kept these).....7D and 2P
    • 4 40%ers
    • 2 1964
    • 1 1968 Greek 10 Drachmai coin....it is copper/nickel, but a VERY cool looking coin (see below)
    • 1 1958 100 Lira coin (Italy). The picture below doesn't do this justice. This is a very cool coin. It also is 83.5% silver with nearly 3 tenths of an oz of silver (.2953 ASW) :D

Nice box, Bob. Wish I'd get some variety in my boxes.
