Hello! I am 13 years old and started collecting at age 9! I am one of the few young coin collectors to actually get this into the hobby!I just need some general advice on finding good coins, bargaining with a dealer, geeing good coins for cheap, and ect!
Hello and welcome to coin talk. There are many people here who can steer you in the right direction. Good coins can be found all over the place and so can problem coins. Bargaining with dealers in my experience can be touchy depending on the dealer. I usually expect nothing in this respect although most dealers wont charge tax if you pay cash. Great coins can never be found for cheap, but there are plenty of nice collector coins which you.can get at a low cost. My best advice for you is to get a red book, a copy of the ana grading standards, and maybe grading coins by photographs by q david bowers. Hang around here and read some of the threads here and you will learn a thing or two.
Thanks! I am too young to get coin rolls from the bank, so do you have any ideas of where I can find rolls to look through on a rainy day? My parents are not at all inolved in my hobby so they cant help me!
Ride along with your parents when they go to the bank. If you have five or ten dollars ask a teller if you can purchase some coin rolls. I don't think there is an age limit to buyin coin rolls. Good luck with your collection.
yes, but they never go to the bank. They do everything online! But I can also get coin rolls online right?
Hello, If I was as young as you are I would start collecting some copper coins or non silver coins because of the price of silver now. Key coins are always nice but not cheap!!!! In my opinion half cents are goin pretty reasonable right now. Most important collect what you like. I have found a lot of older Jefferson nickels in circulation as well. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!
Well Thanks Everybody! I collect Indian Head Cent, Lincoln Cent, Wheat Cent, Buffalo Nickel, Jefferson Nickels, Washington Quarters, V-Nickels, Mercury Dimes.....
I find tons of old Jefferson nickels and wheat pennies in circulation. I usually hoard all pre 1982 pennies too but I'm a weirdo lol
I find the old nickels and pennies in the register at the store I work at. I just buy them from the register. In a few years you can do that too as long as you have a boss who is ok with it.
Hey yeah im ayoung collector to at eleven, but I am the opposite.I collect old US coins like capped bust half dollars and morgan dollars and stuff, and tend to stay away from wheats and Buffalos. The only nickels I collect are shield nickels.but just ask your parents for a ride to the bank.I made some friends at the bank in my little bitty town and ill sit there forever just having a conversation and me and like 3 other tellers will just be looking through rolls of halves searching for silver.actually have found 2 40 percent Kennedys ,and for some reason i found a 2001 s kennedy proof really scratched up and not really collectible but only s proof i have found.
Welcome to the neighborhood! There's plenty of non-expensive coins to collect, and Mercury dimes are very easy to get if you have a budget. I also collect Lincoln cents, really only the scarce and rare dates, and very high grades. Like stated above, I also find some older Jefferson Nickels in circulation, oldest I have ever found was 1938 (I was very surprised). V-Nickels are pretty nice, very nice in higher grades. I've been trying to get a Proof (any date) in PR-64 or higher, but they are scarce at coin shows. Indian cents are nice to collect, too. It's really up to you on what's going to be your next purchase.
Welcome to CT! See if you can start helping out around the house for some money and save up. Perhaps you can ask to get paid with a box of Lincoln cents from the bank once you reach $25. Summer is almost here...see if one of your neighbors needs some yard work, dog walking, house sitting, etc. :smile TC
Just because your parents do everything online doesn't mean there isn't a branch of their bank in your area. Why not pay a visit to the bank, and talk to one of the managers. Explain your situation, let the person know your parents have an account and ask if you can get rolls without having your own account. If nothing else, ask if it is possible for you to start your own savings account. Let's face it. You're going to have to start one sooner or later, anyway. Chris
Hello Taylor I am 13 as well!! One way to find some great coins is to roll search, there is no limit to what you can find!!! Read afew pages of this http://www.cointalk.com/t10176/.
