I have wrote to Congress, the Treasury and Federal Reserve quite a few times on the issue but only got form letters back. I wanted to argue features for the visually impaired, whether the $2 bill circulates a lot or not. It is STILL a current denomination of U.S. currency, and it should have the elarged portrait, a distinct color and the large low-vision numeral on the the reverse to help low-vision people tell a $2 bill from a $1 bill. Quite frankly, the $1 bill should be redesigned with the same features as well, as orginally planned. I'm sure small businesses and vendors would live to make a sale another day, even if they did have to reprogram machines to take new $1 bills, and while they are at it, they can program their machines to take new $2 bills as well. Sorry I keep preaching about this, but I just had to ask, am I even helping these things possibly happening? Are my efforts pretty much worthless?
If the $2's were used more in circulation there would be a better chance of redesign. Right now, they are more of an oddity or novelty to non-collectors, and between the 2003 and 2003A series, the BEP has printed over 350 million two dollar bills.
And if you think they are not circulated here, try and spend one overseas. We were warned not to even use them for tipping purposes.
Some people already think they are fake. A new design would be too confusing for non-collectors. Would also ruin the nostalgia.
I agree. If a person cannot tell the reverse of a $2 from the reverse of a $1 chances are that larger numerals will have no greater benefit to them.
I'd much rather have them ditch the $1 bill altogether and replace it with the dollar coin and make the $2 bill the lowest denomination FRN and pump that out in much greater numbers than they have in the past. I don't really think it needs a redesign, I have enough problems with people accusing me of trying to pay with fake notes as it is, a redesign would only make the confusion even worse.
I would love to see them get rid of the $1 and $2 note and make a coin for each...then our smallest note would be the $5. But, I don't see that happening anytime soon...people are too attached to the $1 note.
I've never, ever, had a problem spending $2's. I get them quite often from my bank (mainly because I like them) and try to use them just as much as any of the other denominations. Most folks accept them, without even batting an eye. Those that do give them a second glance, will often just say something like: "Oh, cool, a two dollar bill. I haven't seen one of these in a while ". That's about it, though. Nobody has ever given me any trouble when spending them.
