    1994 World Cup Soccer & 1996 Olympics

These are two USA 50 cent coins from my modern commemorative album. They commemorate the World Cup soccer when it was held in Chicago & The Olympics when they were held in Atlanta.

Here's a Mexico 200 Pesos from 1986 apparently celebrating the World Cup.

there were many ethnic versions of football from all around the world, but you are correct the english were the first to actually draw up a set of rules, we can boast the oldest professional club in the world (notts county fc) and the oldest club of all in sheffield fc who are amateurs. it's just a shame that the spanish, argentinians and brazillians are far better at the game now than we are................

Ah well, things change every few years. Last time (South Africa 2010) for example, neither Argentina nor Brazil made it to the semi-finals. The Spanish team was really good then. But you also need to keep in mind that, for historic reasons I guess, there is no "British" football team. Not sure how a team would score that combines England and the other three parts of the UK, but it might be worth a thought ...

As for the origins, it does make sense to focus on modern football. However, that should also apply to mints in my opinion. :) For example, some World Cup coins from Mexico depict Mesoamerican ballgame scenes. Those games are in some regards similar to football as we know it today; in quite a few other regards they are not.

i doubt that many if any welsh, scots or northern irish would make it into the britain team, the last one from the other countries who would have been a regular was ryan giggs but he decided he was welsh despite being from greater manchester. i thought the german team in the last world cup were a breath of fresh air, instead of the usual methodical style of previous teams joachim leow has got them playing some really good football and for me they had the player of the tournament in meset ozil...

sorry i completely forgot the the UK has issued another football related coin, one of the 50p series for the olympics has a description of the offside rule on the reverse...............it could have been much better.

That one I have too, and frankly, I like it a lot. After all, offside or not can easily be the subject of endless debates. ;) Not sure whether it is already circulating "in the wild" though; I bought mine in a coin card ...

I thought this was cute. I used to work with a Russian woman and tried to teach her the difference between "must" and "have". Every time, she'd say "I must to..." Hee hee.

But sorry no coin devoted to soccer.
