Hey guys..My names Chris i'm new to coin talk. Anyways, I was at the Antique mall in town and found a 1926-S Oregon Trail Comm. Coin. They are beautiful and I would love to add it to my collection. The price on the tag was $95 but was marked down to $75. This antique mall is huge and this specific booth is in a very obscure part of the building that many people dont see. After looking up the value, it looks like it would be a heck of a buy considering the condition it was in(looked MS). Only problem, once you buy something, there are no returns. I dont wanna buy it and it end up being fake. I wonder how many replicas are out there and what do you think the odds of this being fake are? I was on ebay and found several copys of this coin. Thanks
Pictures of the coin would be great. If you can't, wave a magnet over it or weigh it. If it sticks to a magnet, it's fake. Just because it passes this doesn't mean it's real though.
First off Welcome to Cointalk!!!!!!! Ask the guy that runs it if you can look at it. Take a good resolution picture with you and compare. Also study up on cleaned coins as it may have been cleaned at one point (plenty of threads here on the subject). The best thing would be to try and take a pic, run home and post it here to get opinions, and then run back (assuming we say go get 'em) and buy it. But, I realize this isn't always possible depending on the dealer (the people I buy from do allow this). So that's what I would do.
Were the eBay specimens represented as coins? There have been medals produced that copied aspects of the EFraser/LFraser design. What concerns me about that low price, if as you say, it appears to be MS, is that it may have been improperly cleaned. Chris, too!
I got to see and handle a counterfeit "Old Spanish Trail" Commemorative last month at a coin club meeting. Other than a very slight difference in weight (lighter) it was spot on.
Pictures are needed. Otherwise this is all just speculation. As 19Lyds said, common commemorative are rarely faked. It's not like they're very valuable. Your bigger concerns ought to be whether it was mistreated, like cpm9ball says. Lance.
