Today I bought a lifetime membership to the ANA. My dues were due and I figured I'm going to be a numismatist the rest of my life... so why not.

To celebrate that I'm going to give away a sponsorship to someone here who is NOT currently an ANA member. Basically I'll pay your dues for a year.

All you have to do to be entered is to tell me what the first coin you bought for your collection and you are entered.

I'll draw randomly in a week or so.

    Good luck!

The first coin I actually bought is a little embarrasing to say the least. :(
After I was given my dads collection I was excited about coin collecting. I went on ebay and hastly bought a 'toned' SBA dollar for $12. Lesson learned. :headbang:
ps. I later realized it was a baked coin for sure.

SWThirteen Needs a 24/7 Coin Shop

I was in middle school when my mom let me choose one thing from the coin shop. I decided to get a 1901 indian head penny. I liked it because there was a hole in it. I wore it as a necklace for a while. One day at school I look down to find the coin missing! I felt pretty stupid going around to my classes asking if anyone found a penny on the ground, cause I lost mine... haha. Luckily a friend of mine found it and gave it back to me. Now I use it as my lucky penny when scratching lottery tickets... it has yet to work. :)

My first coin that I bought was when I was about 10. I was at a coin store with my Grand pa and bought a 1920 mercury dime. The reason I bought it was because it was the year that my Grandpa was born. I still have that coin and will always keep if for a memory of my Grandpa.

The 1st coin I ever purchased was actually purchased by my mom for my 9th or 10th birthday. She told me for this birthday I could get anything I wanted for $75 or less. I had coins given to me but this one I was getting to pick something I wanted. I told my mom I wanted to go to the coin shop for my birthday. We went and I looked all over the shop, and decided on a barber quarter. It just happened to be $75. My mom thought I would get a lot of coins for $75, but I got 1 quarter! You could have bought my mom for a penny at that moment!!! She couldn't believe that the coin she spent as a kid could cost that much, and that I spent the entire amount on 1 item!!

I have been trying to locate it in my coins but haven't gone thru them all. I would hope/imagine it has gained some value since then. That was in '74-'75!

She still brings that story up till this day!!

Actually, I bought two. Been collecting off and on over several years, when I found two coins for my Lincoln cent collection. Bought the 1914 D (in XF) and a 1911 S (MS63) at Colonel's Coins in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Wife had given her blessing, but had reservations post purchase. She still cannot believe that I paid that much for two "pennies". Probably the best monetary investment I have ever made. Yes, they still reside in my collection. Doubt that I could ever afford to upgrade either....or want to.

The first coin I ever purchased was an indian head cent. My mom was letting us pick one coin out and I remember I was going through a bin of indian head cents in 2x2's and was just looking for the oldest one I could find, lol. I think it was around 1890ish, I don't remember the exact date, but I do still have the coin!
