Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and I am fairly new to collecting coins. Anyways, I just got a 1999 Silver Eagle and immediately noticed this "u" shaped gouge on the reverse side over the word silver. However, the letters from the word silver are still present within the gouge so you can still see the word. I attached a pic of this. So the question here is, is the some kind of error at the mint or did something hit this coin at a really high rate of speed and impact? Me being an optimist would say its some kind of minting error. But I could be wrong does anyone have any input on this matter? THX...
Welcome to the neighborhood! It appears to be a strikethrough. Occasionally, debris can fall between the planchet and the die and the result is that it is impressed into the face of the planchet. Strikethroughs are fairly common, and the size of the strikethrough will dictate how much of a premium, if any, someone is willing to pay for it. Sometimes, the debris will fall out of the impression, like yours, and other times it will be retained. As a rule, retained strikethroughs will command a slightly higher premium. It's hard to place an exact value on something like this. If it were to be auctioned on a venue like eBay, it all depends on how many people are interested in trying to win it. Chris
Never seen an eagle ever before, probably because I haven't seen enough coins haha! Thanks for posting, cool find!
Quick question, I was looking over some silver dollars the other day, and forgot that I had bought this Peace dollar with a good size chunk missing from the planchet. Its about 12mm long by 3 mm wide. The Peace is otherwise really nice, maybe a 64. Does a planchet erro like this have any value, or is it detrimental to value?
