serifs lincoln cent

    Can someone please explain to me what the serifs on a coin are.

    It's a stylistic font accessory, see attached picture, which is Times New Roman font.

    To the OP'er when something (a book usually) is talking about serifs on a Lincoln cent then they are usually talking about the shape of the S mintmark on the coins. The serifs of the San Francisco mintmarks are rather distinctive and once you develop a feel for what it should look like then picking out a fake mintmark becomes phenomenally easier.
