Hi, I am thinking about placing my pre '55 proof coins in capital holders and wondering if there is a better holder also is there a best practice when doing this? Thanks for the help.

Never touch the proofs with your bare hands as this will leave oils from your skin on the coin. Use the 100% cotton, lint free coin gloves.

Some people use airtites for their proofs, I use simple 2x2s for mine.

AirTites in a storage box with a silica gel pack. They will tone in 2x2s.

Agree 100%, but then put the box into a ziplock bag with a nice red cent to absorb any hydrogen sulfide that might find it's way into the bag.

instead of cotton gloves I would recommend using nitrile or latex gloves (get the powder-free kind). They are available in any drug store by the box. They keep the oils away from the coins, but more importantly they are disposable. Each time you will use a fresh pair. Unlike cotton gloves which can not only leave traces of lint, the cotton will over time absorb the very oils from your skin that you are trying to keep away from your coins.

The traditional advice has always been to wear cotton gloves, but we live in the 21st century where a much better solution is now available.

I would also use air-tite holders and latex powder free gloves to handle the coins. For the air-tites you have the choice of holders with rings or what they call "direct fit" hold. Basically a holder without the ring. I've used both and ended up preferring the "direct fit" holders. I just like the way the coin looks in that holder more than with the rings :)
