Ok I know befor even ask. you all want pic's my camera is down so I will get some up asap.OK now my question.I have a 2007 penny missing large part of beard and section of ear.My first thought was greaser but the area is just to clean of strike. I see no sign of stretch or flatness that normal'y shows with a greaser.the area is very crisp and clean.I have looked all over the web to try and find anything close to this does any one have any ideas or any one heard of this happening before.Once again I will post pic's as soon as I can
I have one very similar to yours but a nickel instead. I have no idea but I will definetly watch this post for answers.
Perhaps instead of grease, the die picked up plating in that area and with use infused that into the die iteslf ?
Just a question...the beard area is one of the highest relief areas on the obverse and therefor one of the deepest spots on the die. How, and why, would they polish that area of the die without ir affecting any other part of the die? Richard
Who knows why! However isn't the die itself convex slightly and therefore making it easier to relief that area?
The beard down around the lower part of the jaw is the highest relief and there fore the deepest part of the die, but as it comes up to the ear and the temple area the relief is much lower and that part of the design is very shallow into the die. the section inside and in front of the ear is VERY shallow. With some polishing the field area of the die is lowered enough that those areas around the ear are now at the same level as the field. With any more polishing design details are lost and you get that flat blank area inside the ear and toward the temple.
In my coin search I have seen many 2007 like this. In fact even last night. I'm going back to look at them again at some point. I'll try to find the one that was most interesting and post it here.
