When do we find out?

 

My views are closest to these, so I'll riff on them. I'm going to pursue the obvious by saying that two coins appear to be in slabs: the Barber and the 20 cent piece (both seem to have MA toning). Bagged coins are the Bust half, being previously cleaned, the IHC for its questionable color (although a really nice coin otherwise) and the Peace dollar due to cleaning/polishing.

I agree with a poster above, with the exception of the Indian. It looks too good to be true.

BTW, what does whizzed mean? - a shinning machine?? chemicals??? If so , then what kind?

 

Lots of good observations and guesses. Let's narrow it down:

Only one of these coins graded cleanly. All the others were bagged for one reason or another. I'll announce results soon but let's see who can guess the one ok'd by both ANACS and PCGS.

I am not too familiar with your pictures, but the only coin there that shows nice luster is the Barber quarter. So I will play odd man out and say it got slabbed.

Now that I read it all - the twenty cent piece graded both ANAC's and PCGS.

 

My vote also. It's between this and the 20 cent and something about the latter, maybe the color on the rim, strikes me as suspicious.

This sort of makes you wonder what a grader goes through when doing the job. Of course these are pictures and not coins in hand, plus we are not viewing the 3rd sides of the coins, the edge. It also makes it a little easier to understand why a coin might not grade one time, and make it the next, hence grading is subjective. It's much easier to assume they all are gradeable, and just award them with a number on the scale as to how nice they are.

Thanks for playing. Some good information and guesses. As I said in the OP, sometimes it's a crapshoot with TPG grading.

The answer is: only the 1895 Barber quarter graded cleanly at PCGS. It was in an old ANACS holder, PF60. PCGS bumped it to PR61 in a cross. This coin was recently used by the NGC forum in a coin photography contest, for any of you who thought it looked familiar. I may have posted it on this forum too.

Quite a few of you guessed correctly. 900fine gave a good, early guess. I think Eric0911 said it first.

1809 Capped Bust Half
I thought this was a long shot but I tried anyway. It has no hairlines but was obviously cleaned at one time, possibly more than once. It has been toning over so the cleaning was some time ago. Occasionally PCGS is more forgiving with early Mint coins. But not so often when damage is perceived intentional.

1873 Indian Head Cent
This was purchased last fall from Eagle Eye Coins. Many of you know Rick Snow, his reputation and books on Flying Eagles and IHCs, his photo certification program, his variety numbering standard. When I told him PCGS body bagged the coin for "questionable color" he exploded in frustration. And then he graciously accepted a return; I bought a 1794 large cent from Rick instead.

1875-S 20c piece
This piece was actually graded at one time by ANACS as MS60 (old, small holder). PCGS would not accept a cross at any grade and returned it "altered surfaces". I cracked it, did an acetone dip, and below is the result (before and after). The toning dissolved because it was organic, not natural. Some doctor tried to conceal a slightly stained and lifeless surface with artificial toning. Actually he tried and succeeded in fooling ANACS (and me, as I bought it). I sold it to my local B&M for a significant loss. We both agree the coin wasn't close to MS60, either.




1921 Peace dollar
I figured this one would BB but I had a free submission and nothing to send in. Faint cleaning hairlines can be seen on eagle and Liberty at certain angles. PCGS bagged it as "improperly cleaned". No whizzing was done. It may have been dipped at one time. But not in the ten years I've had it. I carried it as a pocket piece for a long time which may help explain its appearance.

 

Thanks for the post Lance. That was a lot of fun! The 20 cent deception was surprizing! I agree with Rick on the IHC, the TPG's are crazy and I trust Rick above them.
