Hi It's my first time buying this type of coin All comments welcome. Price, condition whatever Thanks Alan
It's a nice common design but someone has applied darkener to it and that's not a good thing normally speaking. I wouldn't pay more than a meager price for that token. In other words, and if you got it off ebay. Read the listing carefully, if the seller never mentioned anything about darkener, I forget the name of the darkener, send it back if you can. If not, then you learned a lesson, jmho.
Actually I think that's the way the word was spelled back in that timeframe but that's just a guess. As far as $10 being too much, no I don't think it's too much at all. I have one of those and they're really cool looking tokens. Yes, the name of the darkener is Deller's and many ppl use it. There's nothing wrong with it but the majority of collectors will not buy tokens that have had it applied to them. just a heads up! :thumb:
Thanks so much, That's why I love Thea's forms. People like yourself are kind enough to take the time to help people like me with little or no knowledge. And you do it willingly and without compensation. Just because you care enough about the hobby and the new people trying to learn. Now ppl ? that is a new one for me Thanks again Alan
Fretboard, I didn't have may Rulau handy but I thought I read in this one of these sites that it was a variety when I posted that. But alas I went to look for it and now cannot find it http://acdwyer.com/millions_pg1.aspx http://www.hardtimestokens.com/LibertyNotOneCent.html
Hi Fretboard I just talked to the seller and he says it has never been darkened since he owned it. And in his opinion it has never been. I was wondering could it be the lighting? I know coins look so much different in the hand than a photo. I have bough coins in the past thinking OK not bad, and when I get them I am saying way better than I though. Alan
Alrighty then, maybe it's been in a fire. I don't know but that token just don't look right to me and if you just hold off a bit you can get a better one. One thing to keep in mind about buying tokens is the sale is usually driven by trends and that's true especially on ebay. Wait and get a better one, that's what I'd do. Incidentally, this is mine. I know it's different than yours but at least you can get an idea of how they should look. good luck!!
People were spelling it both ways back then, based on either Samuel Johnson's British English dictionary (defence), or Noah Webster's new (1828) American English dictionary (defense). Since Webster's dictionary became the standard reference for American spellings, his spelling is what was ultimately adopted in the US.
this is the same token as yours although not the best grade but it is a good idea to what a normal aged collar is the large cent is not intended for this its just in the pic with it its the one on the left
Nice token "tribute" is spelled "tribut" on the token. I'd pay ten bucks for it but I buy mainly what I like regardless.
