Can someone help me out with this coin. I cant undertand why it was not Grded with a PL. I agree with the 62 and think it was actually liberal but i was positive It was atleat semi PL due to contrast and mirror like surface.any ideas?
The reverse might be close, but I don't see the obverse as being so. I think that both sides have to be graded as PL or the designation is not given. Jim
Pics dont exactly do justice but i only have the camera on my phone. Maybe this is better or maybe im just wrong lol.
Give NGC a call. I think the grader has the option to add comments to the worksheet he uses, and if there, someone will read them to you. It might help enlighten your concern about it.
To be considered PL or DMPL the surfaces must be reflective enough to read text (such as a newspaper) in them from a certain distance. I believe for PL...the coin must be held 2-4 inches from the text source and be readable on the coin. For DMPL...it must be 4 inches. This is for both sides.
If you want to do this as suggested, simply on your own, go to: coingrading.com and look under prooflike coins. They have all the monographs to test it, which you can print out. They are used by Randy Campbell from ANACS, who is one of their graders. I would still call NGC if there are doubts.
i have read this but i have bee having issues maybe you could clarify.I have done this test with a ruler as i had read online, but i feel like some reflection is coming from the the slab itself when trying to gague the reflectivity.
I have never done it with a slabbed coin and I don't have one to try it on. I didn't think about the case being reflective.
. i guess maybe i should stop trying to fight the grade they know better than I. Maybe just a good contrast coin.
Without seeing the coin in hand, I really can't say what it is. Based on the photos, it doesn't look like a true PL...but the photos you posted make it hard to tell. Personally, I have never mastered the skill of photographing proof or PL coins so I find it challenging myself.
There is a good explanation for DMPL & PL diagnostics at this link. Chris http://coinauctionshelp.com/proof-dmpl-pl-morgan_dollar-identification.html
The coin doesn't look PL, at all. I see no mirror in that coin. Also, don't see anything that vaguely resembles a cameo effect on the details.
You do need some level of cameo effect. I still say it's not a "proof-like" coin. If it did qualify as such, the grade would be significantly lowered, as the effect on the cheek would need to be viewed as circulated to some degree.
