VAcookey picked up this Morgan in a bucket of coins in 2x2s with a sign saying all dollars 50.00. These people were flipping silver and not much else. It has a bad ding on the rim, but its hard to see in the airtight. We are going to send it in with a bunch of other coins and see if it does come back proof or PL. Just wanted to show it off and see what you folks think.

It is not a proof. The easiest way to tell is by looking at the denticles. Proof coins are struck more than once to make all of the details very sharp. As you can see, the denticles display no uniformity in shape. At best, this coin is going to grade MS64 (no PL either). If you submit it for grading, it will cost you $25 or more. That means you will have invested about $75+ in this coin, and you can buy them already certifed MS64 for about $65. Save your money. It's a nice coin, but if you ever decide to upgrade, you'll never get your cost out of this one.

I like it and I'll call it a proof if I want to!

Its not about how much we get out of it. I dont mind spending the money on getting it graded. I have never seen an actual proof Morgan, so I have no basis to judge. Hadnt thought about the denticle part, thanks for pointing that out. The PLs I have seen in person were no more reflective than this one, hence my thought process. Coin world shows an MS 64 at 100, so I certainly wont be upset if it comes back even as MS 63.

PL and DMPL can basically be determined by testing the reflectiveness of the coin. Take a newspaper or notecard with text on it. Then, gold the coin 2-4 inches from it. If you can read the text in the fields...the coin is PL. If you can read it more than 4 inches away, then it is DMPL. At least, I think that's the correct distances.

Keep pouting because it's still not a proof. I do think it's a good deal for $50.

Sorry, but owning a proof morgan is a dream of mine... let alone scoring one for $50. Unalike the others here, I think yours may be PL, did you try the newspaper trick? I prefer a ruler.

This is usually what a PL or DMPL looks like when photographed.

Cookey, what you need is a real nice 1895 Morgan in about PF66.

Just for those who may care. I am no longer going to be posting here. Read here for why. http://www.cointalk.com/t172816/ VAcookey will still be posting I am sure. Merc, thanks for being one of the cool guys.

Oh BTW condor, she was joking with the pouting thing. People around here need to grow a sense of humor. Another reason I am bailing.

I know she was joking, I was continuing the joke. How's your sense of humor? :) (I suppose I need to use the smilies more.)
