Since this is my first post ever, I believe that I added the attachments in correctly, but we will see. I recently just picked this up and was wondering if someone could help me grade it. I'm not positive, but I think it may have been cleaned before. What do you guys think?

Pics are a little overexposed, but I'll say AU53.

I think it does show signs of an old cleaning, though, yes.

Coin had a killer strike so any missing detail is pure wear. And with that much missing detail, XF at best. And yes, it has been cleaned but I can't say if it was harshly cleaned or not.

I'll go up a bit on Merc and say AU55. I am going back and forth on the cleaning though.

Thanks for the responses. In your opinion, how much does the value suffer, with the possibility of a cleaning?

If the coin has been cleaned...then the value could suffer a lot. There are different kinds of cleaning...for instance "dipping" a coin if done properly is not damaging and might help the value. But, most kinds of cleaning is considered "improper cleaning" and is damage to the coin. Being a 1917 Type 1 SLQ that has been circulated...if it was improperly cleaned a significant amount of the collector value would have been lost. I can't say for certain how much because the photos are pretty overexposed and it is hard to price problem coins. Most serious collectors won't buy a problem coin so they can be very hard to sell for a decent price.

Solid AU53. Possibly cleaned? Wear is nice and even. All the signs of a lower-end AU coin. :)

Welcome to CoinTalk jty786, That's still a decent starter Standing Liberty quarter. You've got a great reference coin for your next SLQ's.

IMO it is in the VF35 to EF40 range. It shows even legitimate wear on all the high points. It is all wear. I cannot see evidence of harsh cleaning in the photos but it appears to have the look/color of a cleaned coin. Without the cleaned look, I might have limited my guess to EF40. How does the remaining luster look in hand (or is there any)?

Yes, nice strike! Look at those rivets.

I would guess AU50 but if the luster is impaired it could drop to XF. It has probably been cleaned but might still grade if no abrasive cleaning damage is seen. Using a loupe, look carefully for hairlines crossing devices.

There's no hard and fast rule about the loss in value from an improper cleaning that body bags it (into a "genuine" or "details" holder). But a rough guess is 50%. Problem-free, in a good TPG holder, it might be worth $125 or so. So it's a bit of a gamble to get it graded. Figure fees and shipping and insurance each way will cost $35 or so. Probably not worth it, IMO, unless there is sentimental value to you.

Cleaning coins should be a crime.
