So I'm taking a trip to Germany and was wondering what coins and rolls one could take with them to flip for a good profit or at least better then here in the states

as an example I have some 2005 D bison and ocean in view rolls in OBW are these worth much across the pond?

or 2009 log cabin OBW or even formative years?

also junk silver and ASE's and a few maple leafs and a roll of those 2011 wolf coins

I also have many rolls of state quarters and the new national park quarters.
is there anything I get get on from the Americas that are worth more over there?

any decent and non smart alec advice would be appreciated

Open ebay.de, go to "Münzen" category, see what was popular by checking complete US coins related listings from sellers who only ship to Germany.

Aw, c'mon! Lighten up! I'm glad you're going to get a chance to travel. I'm sorry I don't have any previous experience to offer, but that doesn't mean you should smile and be happy. Are all the people in Bullion grinches?

not grinches but it would be nice to get more then bs answers is all...I really would like to know now BEFORE I get over there what would be good to take along with me for trading that would be of the best value...I honestly know nothing about Germany nor the coin collecting they may or may not know...

I get the jokes but 99% of the time I post in the non bullion sectors of coin talk I get spammed with jokes...

I just want some seriously splashed in too is all...

I really can't tell you what would be best to take with you, but I can tell you this. I've been buying French, Swiss & BeNeLux medals from European sellers for about 7 years now, and in the course of browsing the US eBay & European eBay sites, most of the US coins that I've seen offered by European sellers have been in terrible condition. With this in mind, I would think that if you take some better quality specimens, mid-MS, you will probably find a lot of buyers for them.

There was a recent thread from a collector in the UK who was very proud of a proof Ike dollar he had acquired. Said it is difficult to get US coins there. So maybe some Ikes. Maybe some Kennedys. They're both well known figures in Europe.

Where is "Chrisild"? I may have his avatar name wrong, but he's German, a frequent poster on this forum, resides in Germany if I'm not mistaken, and judging from his posts, seems to be very knowledgeable about the German coin market.

I'm sure he'd be glad to give you some good scoop.

Hopefully he'll chime in, or you could PM him.

I would definitely welcome a pm from him or anyone else from Germany...I'm looking at this as a trader would but also learning about the culture too...

Let's not confuse humor with BS!

Why not see if ebay.de has a coin discussion board and pose your question to them?

I think it's great you're going and wish I were in your shoes. Ich spreche ein bischen Deutsch; habe es im Gymnasium studiert, vor langer Zeit! Ich möchte sehr viel Deutschland schliesslich besichtigen!

Right here, exept he cannot really contribute much in this case. Sorry, what I collect in terms of American coinage is mostly modern pieces, and those I get either from swapping or when I am in the US. The States/Territories Quarters were collected by quite a few people here. Lincoln commemorative pennies, yes, Native American Dollars, yes - but the problems begin when you expect to make a good profit. At coin shows around here such pieces will indeed be somewhat more expensive than in the US, but it will be difficult to offer them to dealers there. Some collectors have even started "rings" where people get coins cheap (preferably at face) and then distribute them among interested members ...

Oh, and by the way, calling a woman Fräulein here won't make you popular. ;) Apart from that, have a great time in Europe!

Hey - I'm no expert, and kinda new here, but I do recall reading about this matter before, only it was in terms of a larger part of Europe than just Germany. As some above suggested - Ike dollars. But what I read were just U.S. dollars in general (specifically Ike's and Sacagawea (sp?) dollars). I also remember reading that Jefferson nickels were very popular - which could obviously entail both your Bison rolls, as well as any extra earlier silver war nickels you might be wanting to sell, seeing those often go for under spot here at home. For some reason I get the feeling that if the German people enjoy collecting Jefferson nickels, that they'd really like the war nickels (esp if they're not totally corroded from circulation). You should take along a few rolls of statehood quarters, or maybe the national parks quarters would be better. Some of those have become quite scarce here, so I'd imagine in Europe it could only be worse.

Finally, do you go metal detecting? If you do, take your detector along with you! I want to so bad, and the first place I'd opt to go would be the areas of the Third Reich where many people say that tons and tons of 1930's 2 & 5 Reich Marks coins were actually buried, I believe due to the swastikas on their backsides. Those are two of my favorite coins to collect, and the 5 Reich Marks are nearly a 1/2 Oz of silver and draw a nice little premium (esp certain dates) here in the states!

Either way, have fun. Someone also suggested somewhere, can't remember, to simply go to Facebook and search for coin collecting groups. Join one with a bunch of members, make a post asking for anyone from Germany who knows the active market there to inbox you, and then start asking away.

Have a nice trip - be safe!

I suspect you plan to be in a select number of places in Germany over a limited period of time. I suggest you get the names of the coin shops in those cities/areas & give them a phone call. You can ask them their business hours & if they would be interested in your bringing some US coins for them. See what they say.

If you post the cities/areas you plan to visit, then some of us could possibly provide the names of some German B&M coin shops.

BTW, I was scheduled to be in Hamburg this week but had to reschedule.

what you mean by a good profit? I'm not looking to gouge anyone I was looking at an auction on ebay.de and it was for circulated coins

    Lot 36 x USA Münze

    One Cent : 1950 - 1951 - 1952d - 1953d - 1956 - 1956d - 1959 - 1960 - 1962 - 1964 - 1975 - 1977d - 1979d - 1981 - 1989 - 1992d - 1993d
    Five Cents: 1946 - 1947 - 1957 - 1960 - 1961 - 1963 - 1964 - 1965 - 1982
    One Dime: 1967 - 1971 - 1977 - 1977d - 1992 - 1998 - 2000
    Quarter Dollar: 1967 - 1979 - 1984
    6 wheats cents
    11 memorial cents
    9 nickels
    7 dimes
    3 quarters
$2.07 face value and it sold for 5.52 euros
is this an average price? also is it all of these that the buyer wanted or just some?

oh yea another thing how is the market for uncirculated high grade coins? or is it just that most people over in Germany aren't as hardcore about coins as people in the USA are and circulated is just as good as ms 63-70?

You asked what you should take with you to Germany, my reply of Deutschemarks, and Euros, was not meant for humor but a serious suggestion.

I was simply referring to what you wrote in your first post, about "wondering what coins and rolls one could take with them to flip for a good profit or at least better then here in the states" ... Does not have anything to do with gouging; the question is quite simply, how would you sell them? And that is why I wrote that (unless you have some rare or expensive piece) you won't be able to sell them to dealers at a coin show for example.

Sure, eBay could be a viable alternative. Now whether €5.52 is a good price for US coins with a face value of $2.07 ... guess that if you bought from a dealer or at a show, you would pay more. But I suppose that in this case the seller sold whatever he wanted to get rid of as a lot, and the buyer wanted some of these.

As for high grades, in my opinion "serious" collector do want better grades here too. But the price span is not as extreme as (with quite a few coins) in the US. We don't have 70 point scales, and hardly anybody uses TPG services.
