That rosey does nothing for me at all. I wouldn't give $20 for it, but will guess that since it's coming out of teletrade that it be purchased by teletrade for $63

To heck with the auction; stick with the good beer!

I know the Rosie Dime answer is being posted tomorrow. I did win the guess the previous Kennedy Half posted, but didnt have another toned coin to post. However now I do, I just bought this toned Morgan tonight. So I will toss this out into the fray in this little dead period before the Rosie Dime contest ends. NGC lists the Numismedia price on a regular untoned 1886 in MS64 condition at $102. How much premium do you think toned example should bring? (or maybe a better question is how much did I overpay!)

I thought the color pattern was very interesting (and unusual), so I sprung for this. I haven't seen the coin in hand and when it arrives, if I dont love it, I will return it.

Just a little clue before you guess, this coin was a "Buy It Now" on ebay, so I am sure I paid more than it would have sold for in a true auction ... I am guessing by about $50. So when you post ... post what you think it's worth ... then perhaps add $50 for a 2nd guess on what I (over)paid.

rlm, i am going to say you are guessing $225 on what it's worth and $275 on what I paid (since I am admitting to overpaying by about $50)

$350 is what I think you payed bin

With its dark areas, this has the risk of being unappealing in hand (or less than the photos suggest, I should say). Grey Sheet bid is $89; I'm going to say it's "worth" $160 and you paid $210.

BTW, what makes you think you paid about $50 over its FMV?

I like this one alot. Attractive toning with a very NT appearance. I don't think it drove the same premium as those wild AT looking rainbows that are in plastic, but I'd prefer this one to those. I'll guess 4x, and then you paid another 50 on top of that to some dealer fishing for toner premium madness using the BIN (a primary reason I don't even look at BIN's on ebay, just too much wildly high asks to wade through). $450.

I like it, too; I tend to like subtlety over glitz. But those dark areas approaching charcoal at 10:30 and 2:00 are limiting, IMO. I see a lot of these raw at shows and they never fetch much of a premium. Of course this one, slabbed, on ebay, is going to, as you say, incite toner madness and higher prices. Which brings me to the can of worms that Winged is opening by asking what it's "worth" vs. what he's paid (or someone will pay). It's worth, apparently, whatever someone can get for it, but I don't believe, upon analysis, it's a very strong toner.

I do believe my guess is a bit low but I actually forgot it was slabbed when I guessed. Oh well.

Yup.. I'd never pay 450 for this puppy. Agree that the dark areas will limit it, or should. I'd probably not go more than 120'ish on this one, which is why I lose 1000 toner auctions for every one I win. Unless is a gotta have it coin, I'm cheap... those coins I do win in cheap mode help my overall coin ballance sheet stay in check so I'll have at least a 1 in 10 chance of getting out the same $'s I put in when I sell... and maybe a 1 in 1000 chance of making .00001% on my investment/hobby.

    Very interesting posts so far!

I have to say that there was something really cool about this coin, the character of it sort of talked to me -- and I liked the darker brown and amber tones (in the photo at least) -- and how they mixed with brighter colors. The coin looks OLD and like it's been through the "mill" (even though it's mint state).

When I get the shipment later this week, I will photograph it again and post the photos.

It really is a good question though, how should a coin be valued? If 10 guys would pay $200 for a coin, and 2 guys would pay $300, and 1 guy would pay $500. What is the "fair market value" of the coin really? I guess you would have to say $500. But if that one guy with $500 to burn, keeled over and died, is the coin suddenly worth only $300 ... I would have to say yes.

Maybe the "fair market value" might be better estimated by averaging everyones guess (on this board) instead of going by what the high bidder paid.

Ok, here is the answer as I dont think we're going to get any more guesses ...

First a summary of the guesses:

    WORTH ~~PAID

    $225 ~~~ $275
    ---- ~~~ ~$350
$245 ~~~ ($295) (only gave 1 number, i guessed it was the value number)
$160 ~~~ $210 (thought guess was low, didnt realize the coin was slabbed)
    $400 ~~~ $450
    $120 ~~~ ----
    ==== ~~~ ====
    $230 ~~~ $280 (Averages)

So the average of what you all thought the coin was worth was $230 (with the average Buy It Now price guess at $280).

The answer is: I paid $300 as a Buy It Now price.
I thought the coin was worth perhaps $250?

These numbers are amazingly close to the averages of all the guesses.

I am declairing joint winner's: Coinissimo ($245) and/or RLM ($225/$275). (Coinissimo wins if his guess was the value, but RLM wins if Coinissimo's guess what he thought I paid)

Honorable Mention goes to Seasnake with a Buy It Now guess of $350

    Good job everyone!

Winged, I enjoy your posts and have a couple of comments about this one.

I used to participate in the ebay Coin discussion board and, when I once wrote that I typically returned most of the coins I won on ebay, incurred the wrath of all the dealers who participate there (and there were many). According to them, ebay's return policy is only begrudgingly agreed to by them, a necessary requirement of doing business, and they emphatically said that ebay is not a forum for buying coins on an "approval basis." I thought you might find this interesting. In my experience, dealers, with their razor-thin margins, get very angry with buyers who, in their minds, "take advantage of" ebay's buyer-friendly environment.

My sense about this toner is that it's very common. I have to credit this thread over the last six months with educating me about this. Matte charcoal areas represent the final stage of toning (tarnish) and are therefore not desirable. While I think your coin has a really attractive, natural look, I'm afraid that once you get it in hand you're going to find that these areas are such end-of-line tarnish.

Looking forward to them! I'll be curious to see how they compare with the seller's.

Hey thank for that tip oval man ... i edited my original post ... can you edit out that info in the quoted reply above ... I didnt realize.

interesting info on the "end-of-line tarnish" ... so since it's at an end of the line state ... what will happen to this coin over time ... just turn black? (how long does that take?)

Well since this thread seems to be dying a slow death (maybe nobody has any new toned coins to post?) ... I will post another B.I.N coin I bought last night.[FONT=&quot]

Any guesses on the market value? (and/or what the BIN price was?)

This is a very nice toning pattern IMO. I like how Liberty looks into the color. That cheek looks awfully torn apart for a 3, however. Knowing what you paid for the last one, I'm guessing you paid $399 for this, which could be considered its FMV (if slightly high).
