LD whenever you type www into your browser, please be aware that if you type anything more, I think it is prudent to let you know that the possibility of a potentially malicious attack - is very likely.

I don't surf that much, yet there is stuff blocked everyday in my software that I don't bother getting a warning over. I just turn my settings on to handle it automatically.

    Hi everyone!

My name is Roz, I'm the Community Experience Manager here at Photobucket. This is an inspiring forum! Not only is the Coin Talk admins watching out for their users, you guys are all very supportive. Its refreshing to see!

I'd like to shed some light from our end on what happened. EyeEatWheaties account is on a Photobucket sub-domain along with a group of other users. A fellow Photobucket user on this sub-domain unwillingly uploaded a file that had a virus associated with it. As you know, Doug Prather contacted us about this. Around the same time our teams were pulling the file down and contacting the user. Symantec placed a virus warning on all content on this sub-domain, even though it was just one file that had a problem. EyeEatWheaties content was on this sub-domain was flagged as malicious by Symantec, even though it was not problematic. Doug already had a conversation going with Symantec and notified them of the situation. They then pulled the virus notification for the sub-domain.

I am working with our System Administrators on how to work this out with Symantec. I'm hoping that they can not put an alert on the entire sub-domain or at least notify us when they throw up a virus notification for an entire sub-domains. This should resolved this problem with any future situations like this.

Side-note: This situation did not have anything to do with the extended Maintenance issue that we experienced in the last few weeks. The two were totally unrelated.

If anyone has any questions regarding this please contact support@photobucket.com and mention that you are directing this question to me :) My apologies for not chiming in on this conversation sooner.

    Thanks Roz!

A lot of us use Photobucket to share our images and store them. :)

Very nice, understandable, and reasonable explaination.

    Yes, welcome!

  13. I really cannot stand photo bucket but I do commend you for coming on here to give us some info. That really is a case of going above and beyond...well done!

It's unfortunate that every time I try to look at any images on Photobucket it locks up my internet. Not as bad as imageshack, though!

I am fairly certain that they are not taking this issue lightly. I received a similar email, slightly more personal from Roz. A lot of things happened here, but first and foremost, the warning that Norton users received was ridiculous and totally uncalled for.

I learned that on many message boards and photo forums that are image intensive, that Photobucket is the preferred image hosting site. Given that a lot of those MB users also have Pro Photobucket accounts and that revenue is generated from those "Pro" accounts,.... Photobucket can not afford - nor should they ignore these type of issues. I wonder what percentage of the Photobucket visits are originated from a linked image on a message board? I bet it is a healthy amount categorically - if not the biggest! MB's are Photobuckets life blood.

Tying together digital cameras and imaging and the subsequent hosting and posting of those images and what the Norton software did is inexcusable and frankly.... I think it can be skewed into some type of libel, in that the Norton warning can be portrayed as malicious in nature, since the probability of anyone actually finding the infected file as a result of an unrelated linked image is near impossible.

I know that if I was Photobucket and had an attorney on retainer that I would be seeking advice.

You still don't understand what happened do ya ?

I tried to explain it, I really did. Maybe this will make it easier - http://safeweb.norton.com/about

The Norton product did exactly what it was supposed to do. There was a picture infected with a virus - that is undeniable.

I'm the one who made the mistake, not Norton. Quite simply, I misunderstood what the product was telling me. And I explained that I was the one who made the mistake many, many posts ago. See post #130.
