    Set Completion of the 1/2 oz American Gold Eagles 1986-2006

    Well...today is the day my fellow collectors:eek:hya: ...I have completed the last purchase that completes the 1/2 oz series. The 1989 and 1990 in PCGS MS 69 were very difficult. In putting this set together I have to thank Mr. Ken Schlosser (Gold Coin Dealer, Oklahoma) and Anthony Smergailia (DealerLoop Coin , Mobile Alabama) for these hard to find eagles. I am expecting delivery on the final two in the next week or so and hope to post pics. That makes all denominations except the 1 oz Eagles complete...15 - 1oz Eagles to go!Alot of you know that I have been working on these for a long time....cant wait to post the picture pics of the whole series..perhaps in the next year or two I can finish the 1 ounce Eagles and be done with it!

    Congrats. I can appreciate your efforts to complete a set of anything. The time and frustration chasing that last coin are enough to make you turn gray. Not to rain on your parade but there will be another coin next year. That's why my current efforts are towards collecting a set of Franklins; they don't make them anymore.

    Hey CoinHawk...
    Yes that is correct. He mostly deals in early US Coins but keeps an open eye for me on things like this...Ken is also a great source as well. If you contact him tell him I sent you...I always appreciate the good dealers working with me and referrals do build the relationship.

    Yep..you are correct Miker..the set (ongoing) is for my little boy after I leave this fine world we live in...perhaps when he is a young man he will have continued and have every set from 1986 forward in all denominations..perhaps they will buy him a home oneday..I must educate him on this and he is already at 3.8 yrs old developing a feel for the coins. He knows the following on the periodic table:

    Sodium= Na
    Helium= He (makes his balloons float)
    Nitrogen=N2
    "Gold"=Au
    "Silver"=Ag

    Pretty good for a young kid..huh?

    I just bought my first non-1/10 oz Gold Eagle the other day. I got a 2005 1/4 oz. I really like it. I can really feel the weight in my hand. I went to a local coin dealer here in town. He had some 2006 coins, but he also had a tube of a bunch of other dates. I looked through it and the 2005 was the nicest quality coin of the bunch (and he didn't have any of the better dates), so I bought it. I got it for $150. I thought that was a great deal with gold prices being where they are right now. He was selling the 2006 coins for $162...I'm guessing because he had to pay a bit more for them. The cheapest I found the 2005 for online was $157 + shipping and insurance, so I figure I didn't do too bad. I would say that technically it grades MS67 or MS68, but I'm very happy with it.

    Thanks Speedy ..I am planning on taking better photos soon and posting the series. Also coming are the 1/10 th oz Platinum coins both proof and uncirculated...I am getting excited that the end is near for these as well. I only need a few to finish the proof APE's.

    Tcore..congrats on your first 1/4 oz AGE purchase! Got the bug yet? If you decide to try for a set of these whatever denomination..go for the keys first! I waited and it cost me more due to the rise in gold!
    Good Luck Tcore..if I can help let me know..

    Very nice

    That's very very nice.

    I'm just a new colllector, but I have managed to put together a set of NGC MS69 American Silver Eagles from 1997 through 2005. I was buying them on ebay in reverse date order (newer first) and when I got to 1996 (key date) the prices kinda threw me for a loop. :)

    Gosh I love the look of the uncirculated ASEs. They are just stunning. The obverse with the walking liberty wrapped in an American Flag is just an awe-inspiring design. I love that coin more than any other coin I've seen.

    Congratulations on completing your AGE set. Someday when I have my full set of ASEs I may start on the 1/10 oz. AGEs and work my up from there. :D

    Hello Mark...
    That is GREAT!!! The ASE are a beautiful coin...that is exactly what got me into collecting the AGE series. The 1996 ASE uncirculated is the most difficult..the mintages were the lowest thus far but the real problem with that coin is the spotting associated with them. Finding examples without the spots is harder. I am pertty sure it has to do with the rinsing of the dies with water..(someone correct me if I am wrong please) I have 5 or 6 examples of this coin w/o spotting and I plan on sending them to PCGS before they do spot. The spoting is just unappealing and does little to deface the metal. Good luck on the 1/10 th ounce AGE..start with the 1988 first then the 1991 then the 1994.....Good Luck!!

    Its not so much the dies...its the planchets.
    The planchets were cleaned and the cleaner that they used spoted the coins---it happens also on 2000 Proof coins....it is more of a haze on them but it is the planchet cleaning that does it.

    If the coins don't have spots now even after slabbing they might come....I have a NGC MS69 2004 ASE that about a year after slabbing spots came up....it does kill the grade but there isn't anything to do really.

    I would think since your coins haven't gotten the spots yet after 10 years they are pretty safe....but I would slab them just the same.
    The key to the set!
