I was just noticing that with the USMC Commem program there was not a gold coin.
The US Army and now the Medal of Honor programs have the gold. Has there been any news of a USMC Gold being considered?

I ordered the US Army coin today as well since prices are really good right now. Perhaps a Military gold theme would make a nice collection as well...any suggestions on other gold with a Military theme??

    Thanks for this thread, folks.

Usually I ignore commemorative coins, but after reading this thread, I gave a long look to this set. Although I was not impressed with the silver coins, I took a good look at that Gold Coin....WOW! I probably will buy one now. It's just plain beautiful all around. Once again the board gets me jumping over a new offering, which this board is known throughout the hobby for.:)

I love the halves too. Something about the size I think that makes for a great commem.

Two immediatley come to mind. The 50th Anniversary of WWII (1991-1995) 5 dollar gold and the Civil War Battlefields Preservation 5 dollar gold piece.

I just love the MOH commemoratives. I think they are one of the nicest sets to have come out in quite some time. Sadly, the gold is out of my price range at the moment...but I think I'll be getting a silver proof for my birthday. Both are great looking coins.

You can get $5 Gold Commems from APMEX for $394.07 ($14.99 over spot per coin) (If you don't mind random years.)
    )

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but the $5 Commems are
.24187 OZ of gold. Whereas the 1/4 eagles are 0.25. That .00813 difference is about $12 of gold.

The cheapest APMEX price for $5 commems comes out to $1628/oz.
While the $444 mint price comes out to $1835/oz.

Not saying what right and whats wrong. Just running some numbers.

Hey thanks for posting the pics Green, I hadn't seen the actual coins yet, just the mints pics. I initially wasn't that thrilled with the silver ones but after seeing the uncirculated one you put up I might have to spring for one.

Well, I was looking at the coin and noticed that the soldier is wearing a "Fritz" style helmet. I believe this is the first time that piece of equiptment has been put on an American coin. Pretty neat.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

I just noticed it. Did no one else? I spelled the title of this thread wrong. Commeroratives?

    American Eagle Bullion $10 coin:

The one-quarter ounce coin is 21.99mm in diameter, weighs 0.2727 ounces and contains 0.2500 ounces of gold.

Medal of Honor Commemorative 5 dollar gold coin:

0.242 ounces of gold and weighs 0.295 ounces (total weight) and measures 21.6 mm.

Very close indeed. When you take into account the face value of the coin the $5 gold runs rings around the 1/10th of an ounce (5$) bullion coin and is very close in metal content to the 1/4 ounce bullion coin.

I noticed that many years ago when the Army switched to the current Kevlar's. I said to myself, "looks like the old German WWII design". Guess the Germans had it right as we adopted it.....:)
