OK - let's play the grading game

An easy game really, I'll post pics of coins and folks post what you think the coins should grade. There will be pics of coins slabbed by PCGS and NGC. The coins will be of the same date and mint mark so there will be no differences there. I'll tell you to start off that all coins are slabbed as MS examples. And please keep in mind all criteria that are used when it comes to grading such as quality of strike, luster, contact marks, hairlines and eye appeal. In almost all cases I have tried to find untoned examples so that that wouldn't play a part and confuse the issue.

I'm going to post pics of Ike dollars and Morgan dollars - modern and classic examples in other words. Once enough members have posted their opinions I will post pics of the coins in their slabs. After that you can draw whatever conclusions you wish as to if one company is more conservative in their grading than the other and as to whether or not one is more consistent than the other.

First - the PCGS slabbed Ikes. Please post your grades for the coins in the order they are posted - such as 1, 2, 3 etc.

What about the backs of the coins?? or are we going to just grade one side?

    PCGS
1--MS65--one of the crudiest coins I've ever seen.....
2--MS67--nicks on top of the head take it down from 68
    3--MS66
    4--MS68
    5--MS67

    NGC
    1--MS68
    2--MS68
    3--MS69

I really like this as I never really grade Ikes....I don't collect them and don't have much of a chance to see a good many of them!

With both of these coins the obverse carries more weight when grading and I'm not really trying judge anybody's ability here. I'm trying to make a point which I will expand on later. Besides, just posting the obverse saves server space

At the ned of this, I'll happily provide links to all of these pics so that everyone can see I'm not posting pics of coins with the reverses having been beat with hammers or anything. The obverses alone make an honest comparison.

    Now for the Morgans.

I suppose I should say that with all of these coins, Ikes and Morgans alike, I haven't altered the pics one bit except to crop them and resize them. I haven't lightened, brightened enhanced or anything else. I posted the pics just as I found them other than size. And in all cases I've reduced the size - not increased it.

I also chose a few different years - no reason for the particular years other than they are not rarities by any stretch. We'll let NGC go first this time.

Doug...when you fall off the boat, man you really fall in deep water huh? Those your coins? LOL

What I can see on all the coins is the fact that each coin is in MS condition (I think there was 1 Prf but not sure) each coin has it's own appeal. The level of tick marks, swipes, and other distraction were minimum to normal for the Morgans...I am by no means a pro grader but there was the 1883 CC Morgan (3rd one pictured) WOWZER! I am a dog bitting on the bone with that one..66 all the way! I think the point that you are trying to make is that even with slight differences, everyone will have their own opinion? That is what makes it tough to grade on an accurate basis..therefore leading the way to reform for proper grading is never going to occur...too many opinions out there on what is and what is not..This is just my take on the post..right or wrong..thats why I am a collector, not a grader. I would happily be proud to own any of those beauties...
