In the past I have won the best guess a few times while I was out of town and had to pass on putting a coin up so I'll jump on one now for your perusal. This was sold recently, PCGS MS64.[IMG]

looks abit dark to me and I'm not sure the blackish areas will drive too large a premium.... how bout $60

Really nice color, coin has character, but I agree that the left dark area will limit. $50.

I dropped out of the bidding at $80, the hammer price was $120 including the buyers premium. I would have gone a bit higher if the coin was lighter but this is a classic example of a huge ratio, 12X approx. Wingedliberty was closest.

i wonder if the low base value of the coin contributed to the big multiple ... after all most people can afford $120.

perhaps it's typical that you get bigger multiples on attractive toned coins with lower base prices

That is absolutely true. A premium of 5X wholesale is commonplace for MS63/64 Morgan Dollars but almost unheard of for MS67 Morgans.

Thanks for verifying this Lafayette ... makes total sense.

Yea, I totally agree. Even at crazy multiples it still is just in the drinking money range. I don't have a nicely toned kennedy and it would have looked good in my collection, next time.

    a different aspect

We seem to be losing steam on this thread so hows about guessing what the hammer price of this beauty will be. It's on the block sunday night. Pcgs MS66FT[IMG]

i am not a big rosie fan ... but that toning on the reverse is about as nice as i've seen on dime. the obverse is sort of ugly though.

i would guess $60 just for the reverse.

I'm thinking more so I'm at $90, I have an interest in it but not at 90

I think total price (incl. BP and shipping) will be around $90, so I guess that means I'm guessing a $75 hammer price.

Thats what I was thinking but perhaps even a bit more. It's lot#1199 in teletrades sunday auction if you want to watch it.

Didn't mean to step on your toes; wasn't sure what you meant by hammer. I'll go $85 total for my guess, though I might be on the wrong side of you.

Funny, I was thinking of doing the same thing to liven this thread up a bit: I was going to post a toned Morgan from Heritage so we could guess on it, but it was too far along in the auction to make it interesting. I'll do that next month if things are slow here.

Opps, I said hammer which is without BP+ shipping but I think we determined that those were actual coin costs and should be included, perhaps I'll have another sierra pale ale and ponder this.
