Hi all, I just wanted to post a few photos of some coins I have picked up over the past few weeks. Mostly moderns but cool nonetheless.
I really need to thank Siggi and Iceman for their help. Without those two guys I would be completely lost. So THANKS!!!!
Icey Merlin.... simply Iceyyyyyy. ... and if you pray real hard to the queen of the ice fairies... She will hear you and all your dreams will come true..... its true ya know !!@!@! :foot-mouth:
You've created a monster Siggi. Mark: Nice new additions to your collection. Just out of curiosity, what is the building depicted on the third picture?... I have a thirst for knowledge. Bruce
LOL here's my BIG chance! Bruce it is tradtionally known as "Althing". The first meeting was in 930. It is the oldest parliment in Europe and very possably the world. The first meeting was held in Thingvellir Iceland in 930. The "Althing" was disolved under Danish rule from 1800 until 1845, at which point the Althing again began its meetings. The Building was contsrtucted in Reykjavík in 1881 and is now where the Icelandic Parliment/Althing has been meeting ever since.
I'm a firm beleiver that in order to completely understand a particular countries coinage, you need to understand the history behind them as well. Iceland like any other country has a very rich historical past and I'm learning more and more everyday.
Siggi, Mark..... Thanks so much for the information on the identity of the building as well as the short history lesson. I'm also very much interested in the history of the coins, tokens, and currency that I collect. In counterstamps, my main area of interest, each piece is personalized in some way by a name, place, political statement, etc. that compels me to unravel the mystery hiding in each one. I enjoy the challenge. Siggi....I'm glad to hear that you enjoy monster movies, but Mark lives way to close to me, whereas you're "down the block" and pretty much out of range. Have mercy on me, please. Bruce
We are going to have to give you a Icelandic Nickname,, Your Icelandic coin collection is growing very fast,,Faster then mine did when I first started collecting these coins. Keep up the good work,,,:thumb::thumb::thumb:
Thank You Iceman! As I said earlier, if it wasn't for you and Siggi I would be totally lost. Thank YOU so very much for answering all of my questions and the coins! Mark
