ddddd’s Box of 20 Updated (Version 6.0)

    It has been some time, so let's have an update on ddddd's box of 20 journey. In the last installment (May 2022) we saw three changes. Now-with it becoming ever more difficult to part with certain coins-there are only two new entries. A cool world klippe moved on to the home of a well known box of 20+ collector ;) and a potentially unique squared quarter also changed residences (it helped that the offer on it was too good to pass up). In their place arrived a captivating Capped Bust Half and a beautiful Washington Quarter.

    As always, a big inspiration has been the wonderful threads from our very own @lordmarcovan (he gets credit on every update and he certainly deserves it :)).

    The order here is US (by denomination), followed by tokens, and finally world (Territorials fall into the world grouping).

    (1) 1961-D NGC MS 62 BN Lincoln Cent

    Error coins have always piqued my interest. My goal was to find something that stands out and this one does a great job. I've dubbed it "Headbutting Lincoln."

    (2) 1961-D PCGS MS 66+ Roosevelt Dime

    While I’m not big on dimes (I tend to appreciate the larger coins more), this one bucked the trend. The fantastic color won me over and it’s earned a spot in my set.

    (3) 1961 PCGS MS 65 Washington Quarter

    This quarter caught my attention in an auction where I was an underbidder. Fortunately I saw it again several months later and decided to bid stronger-I won for less than my original bid! This is also a date that is not common for color (by 1961 the US Mint was no longer using the the cardboard known to tone mint sets from most of the 1950s).

    (4) 1834 NGC AU 55 Capped Bust Half Dollar

    I've owned several Capped Bust Halfs over the years and have always enjoyed them regardless of grade (I think these look nice from the low circulated grades all the way up to mint state). When I saw the combination of color and luster on this example, I knew it was the perfect one for my set.

    (5) 1958-D NGC MS 64* FBL Franklin Half Dollar

    Lovely rainbows adorn both sides of this Franklin. While a common date-even with color-it hasn’t been easy for me to find a better one.

    (6) 1892 NGC AU 58 Star Columbian Expo Commemorative Half Dollar

    This marked the beginning of the Classic Commemorative series (along with the 1892 dated coin plus the Isabella Quarter). The Columbian Expo was an iconic event that helped showcase Chicago and multiple innovations. The toning highlights the coin.

    (7) 1893 PCGS AU 58 Isabella Quarter

    A nice pair for the Columbian, the Isabella Quarter has long been on my want list. I was fortunate to buy this one in an UNC details holder (QC, which I disagreed with) and then have it straight grade as AU 58. The color is solid and the pl surfaces add to the eye appeal.

    (8) 1935-D NGC MS 67 Star Texas Commemorative Half Dollar

    Here we have another Classic Commemorative and another design that I adore. The spot used to feature a toned coin but when I saw the PL qualities and clean surfaces of this coin, I did something uncommon for me: let go of the toner in favor of a blast white gem.

    (9) 1881-S NGC MS 65* Morgan Dollar (now PCGS MS 65)

    An awesome toned Morgan-this one has it all (color, luster, and clean surfaces for the grade).

    (10) 1837 (circa 1900-1906) NGC AU 58 CD Peacock Token

    This is a token with a cool design and one I first learned about from a LordM thread. The color is a bonus.

    (11) 1780 Austria Thaler Restrike PCGS MS 67

    This Maria Theresa Thaler is a modern restrike and a common coin, but the eye appeal is well above average.

    (12) 1768 Mexico 8 Reales PCGS VF 35

    Besides having the distinction of being the oldest coin in this set, this "Pillar Dollar" is one of the most famous world coins. I've been on the hunt for a while and finally found a beautiful example.

    (13) 1877 Trade Dollar PCGS AU 55

    Yes this is a US Coin, but I'm placing it in the world section as the type was used in commerce abroad (plus it replaced a world coin formerly in this spot). For too long I did not have a Trade Dollar in my set and it wasn't for a lack of searching-I just hadn't seen the right one. When @Mkman123 decided to disperse some of his collection, I pounced on this coin. Recalling when he first posted it years ago, I realized this was the look I had desired (and couldn't find elsewhere). You just don't see many borderline deep mirror prooflike AU Trade Dollars!

    (14) 1883 Hawaii Half Dollar PCGS AU 55

    Struck at the US Mint in San Francisco (dies prepared in Philadelphia), the Hawaii Half displays King Kalakaua. It is another semi-pl with great detail for an AU coin.

    (15) 1887 Mexico 8 Reales PCGS AU 58

    A lovely blast white Mexico 8 Reales used to hold this spot. I upgraded to an even nicer toned example. The new coin also has PL surfaces and the colors pop in hand. I avoided this design for too long but a conversation with @Mkman123 convinced me to get the blast white and then upgrade to the current toner (and I'm glad he did).

    (16) 1896 Guatemala Peso MS 62

    Another want list item found! This 1896 Guatemala Peso is a beautiful silver crown with blazing luster.

    (17) 1904 Japan Yen NGC MS 63

    A great design that keeps gaining popularity. The luster is strong on this example.

    (18) 1932 Poland 10z Queen Jadwiga NGC AU 58 [​IMG]

    After much searching, I finally acquired a Queen Jadwiga Polish 10z; a beautiful design and surprisingly challenging to find lately.

    (19) 2004 Portugal 8 Euro Stylized Goal Keeper PCGS MS 65

    Somewhat of a unicorn, nothing about this coin is standard. You have an oddball denomination of 8 Euro, a modern commemorative coin that was technically considered circulating (with a mintage of 1,500,000), and an abstract design of a goalkeeper making a save. It's also the only example graded at PCGS and on top of that, features amazing colors! The coin was issued by Portugal as they were hosting the 2004 European Football (soccer) Championship-an event as unusual as the coin given the unexpected triumph of Greece over Portugal in the final.

    (20) 2017 Kazakhstan 100 Tenge NGC PF 70 UCAM

    Moderns can be beautiful and this one drew me in. A bimetallic coin, it effectively uses tantalum for the turtle’s shell while the rest of the design is well executed in silver. Another bonus was that I received the 70 grade (not something that I often chase, but still fun to see it when sending in your own raw coins).

    That pillar dollar man!!!!if it could talk,im just recently working on a reale set.The colors really shine under the righ light position.Possibly been underwater for at least 200 years which I believe your example did also.     There is definitely a ton of history with these and some even circulated in the early days of the US.
    Yours is quite cool and putting together a set sounds like a fun project!

    That's a great error coin. I opted to have a similar (D/S & O/C) type error in my collection, albeit a lot older and in much lower grade. I find it interesting that this one circulated so much, but I guess a sixpence was a sixpence in those days, and more people would've spent it than saved it. In fact, I surmise that many people would have spent it first out of their purse, to be rid of it, precisely because it was mis-struck. I reckon it took a couple of centuries to be appreciated for its oddity.[​IMG]

    You're well ahead of the curve on me with this video stuff, and I like how you've put a short commentary beneath each coin. I'd like to do that, but it would take forever in my already-long Eclectic Box posts.

    Oh, yes! I can see why you went for that one! The highest grade Bust half I have owned to date was also an AU55.

    But I decided I wanted one with pastel colors- more like what you've got above-so I sold it, despite the fact it had nice luster. But I never got around to getting another AU. My current type coin is a mere VF30, but I like it for its dove grey toning and the fact that it's an earlier date.

    I like my Franklins in proof, with CAM or DCAM contrast, but yeah, that one earned its star for sure.

    Another nice coin that earned its star. I haven't gone for a toned Columbian half because I guess I'm too cheap. The toners seem to fetch big money, compared to how relatively inexpensive Columbian halves seem to be, otherwise. Or maybe I'm just remembering how cheap they were in the past. That happens to me a lot as I get older.

    Wow! That one packs a bang! Congrats on sticking in there and getting it into a straight-graded holder! I would have given up too soon and admitted defeat when they QC-ed it. This has happened to me before with a medieval hammered gold coin. PCGS details-graded it (not for QC but for another issue). Then I gave up on it and sold it, and the next guy resubmitted it raw and got not only a higher (straight) grade on it, but a better TrueView as well! I still gnash my teeth over that one. Oh well. Win some, lose some.

    Oh- BTW, I have never owned an Isabella quarter. I shall have to address that someday.

    Whoa, Nellie! Brrr! What a frosty supergem! A white coin with a star label! I can totally see why you went there. And I do like 'em white when there's booming luster like that. (I've never owned a TX commem.)

    For some reason, I can't quite bring myself to buy a coin that's toned on one side and not on the other. That's a silly OCD-ish thing, I guess. The color on that one is certainly impressive. I like how the greens glow like the aurora borealis, and contrast the other colors so well. That one really is like a piece of art.

    I like those little hints of color on yours. Here is my by-now familiar one. I see we have slightly different birds, there. For some reason, that escaped my notice until now, though I knew they were different varieties.

    Can't say I've seen many toner MTTs. I like the prooflike ones with contrast. They're really cool coins. One of the more appealing bullion-related issues, I think, because the retro design is fun.

    Kinda hard to beat a Pillar dollar for historical interest. I had a PCGS AU50 but swapped it for a proof 3c piece, which I subsequently swapped for something else.

    In the last year I finally got another. It's not as high grade as the one I had before, but it's an earlier date and I liked the contrasting grey toning on it a lot more. I shipped it off to NGC this morning, to get Photovision images done, so I'll have some prong-free pics of it. Can't wait to see how they turn out.

    Good grief, man! What a beauty! That frosty contrast! Wow! I am truly envious of this one. I have a T$ off at PCGS right now, but I doubt it's gonna be a keeper for my collection, as it's almost certain to "details" grade for cleaning.

    Nice. My Hawaii half was only a PCGS XF40, but I liked the toning on it. I say "was" because I sold it, back when times were leaner. I need to get another some day.

    Ooh! Another beauty that I'm envious of! And I like that this one is blast white. I guess that mark by Lady Libertad's shin must be the only thing that kept this back from a higher grade. It has MS65 eye appeal otherwise.

    Sweet! You've got me by one grade point- and a bit of luster, too, perhaps. That's really clean looking for a 63, at least on the obverse. Mine went off to NGC this morning for Photovision and reholdering, so I can get prong-free photos of it. It will be interesting to see if it looks any better in those than it does in these Goldberg's images.

    I've always liked the Jadwigas, and have had one or two in my swapstock inventory, but never a "keeper" for my collection, as the ones I've had were cleaned. Someday I'll get a nice MS coin, maybe.

    That's just bizzare. Is the lighter colored rectangular area on the dated side a toning anomaly, or part of the design?

    Cool coin. Congrats on the 70-grade. I've only received one in all my submissions over the years.

    It is of course because of you that I have Kazakhstan represented in my collection. I couldn't pass up that sci-fi-looking cyborg owl!

    Edit- dang, I just noticed the prongs in these pix below. I should have sent this one off to NGC for reimaging with the rest that went this morning. Oh well. They're not too intrusive in this set of images, I guess.

    That's cool. I would have been a little surprised PCGS graded it, until I noticed the X-number, and remembered it's in the Krause Unusual World Coins volume.
    That one has a happy new home now. :)

    Thanks! Instagram is a very useful platform for these videos. It certainly helps show the luster and color that can't always be seen on a photo. Something that I noticed on CU (PCGS forum) is that the Instagram video embeds into the post and you can see it without clicking on the link (on CoinTalk only YouTube seems to work that way).

    As far as the descriptions, I figured it was manageable with 20 coins. Plus the coins that carry over from installment to installment keep the same description (so each update requires only a few new commentaries). I like the simplicity of your thread and I definitely agree that it would take forever with a bigger box (plus you have those standalone threads covering many coins that do have nice descriptions).

    I like that VF 30 too! I meant it when I wrote that these look good in virtually every grade. It took me multiple years to find this one so it is a process and I'm sure the right pastel toner will come around for you soon.

    The Columbians have gone up somewhat in MS 63/64/65 (I also recall those being cheaper before the 2020 coin market uptick). In general, even when classic commemorative prices fell, toners tended to fetch large premiums. My 58 star was fairly pricey (for the grade, the toning premium was around 10x) but I thought it was worth it for this coin.
