Hello fellow collectors I know it is hard to ask you to share my exitment as this is pretty local but this one got my pump on over drive. This is a very rare token from Iceland. This is the 5th copy of this token know to exist to date. It´s from the 1880´s and was used in a store in Buldudalur in Iceland. I never thought I would find it came from a collection I bought and was the only token around. The owner had no clue in what it was. Magic still happens
Thanks gbroke Merc Crazy I find your question both funny and a bit rude But thanks for the comment I really like that token. It made my year
You make it sound like you got it for pennies on the dollar... It's a question of ethics... Did you give him at least a fair price on it, or did you buy it for the equivalent of like, $5 US?
The history of Icelandic tokens dates back to the first known in 1856 As coins in Iceland at that time were very scarces and people just didnt have them. We were under the rule of Denmark so our coins came from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Denmark just didnt think we needed coins. Merchants and bakes took the oppertunity to make their own tokens untill the early 1900 when it was banned by the goverment. With most of the seezed or lost in time large ammount of the known tokens are scarce. You can see my collection here http://palmasoncollection.com/index_tokens.html It is one of the largest privatly owned in the world. What you have to understand is that many of the know tokens are very rare with 1-5 know pieces so getting one every 5-10 years is expected as they would come from known collections. This on the other hand did not come from a known collection and is a surprize and jaw dropping. Siggi
My Siggi. I had no idea. They seem very well made and I notice that one is from 1930, a bit of a renegade. Thanks for sharing, so unusual. I am happy for you and glad the toke found a safe home.
That's a great pickup Siggi. I feel the same way about picking up unusual or locally issued tokens, especially those you can attribute to a certain store or person. It just heightens the interest level so much. Congratulations on your good fortune and may more follow. Bruce
Thank you Ripley Louie and Bruce, I apprciate the comments Merc Crazy I didnt make it sound like I got it for pennies on the dollar. You presume I did. And in stead of going the right way asking what a token like this costs and how much I payed for it. You asked if I ripped him off. I might be wrong but I would never start a conversation with a person I do not know like that.
Apologies accepted Merc, I very much appriciate your understanding and I take my hat off for you Regarding price. I am buy and sell coins and my reputation and karma is very dear to me. When I buy collections of coins or notes I always tell people what they have "price wise" and what I expect in return " percentige of sale ". In this instence I payed the gentleman catalog price for a item he did not know had any price. I have never and will never pay pennies on a dollar that´s just bad buisness and Karma Thanks again Merc
Good to hear. I'm just so... pessimistic because I hear about people who don't know what they've got getting ripped off by people over in the US all the time... maybe Icelanders hold themselves to higher standards than we do... I should probably have faith in humanity, eh? Oh, by the way, great find, your jaw must have been on the floor when you realized what it was.
This always made sense to me for some reason "The human is indissolubly linked with imitation: a human being only becomes human at all by imitating other human beings -Walt Whitman" so monkey see monkey do. There are alot of good people on this earth and there are alot of bad people as well. So faith in humanity yes but as with everyting you should always be aware. In the coin buisness there is alot of people who try to get the better of other people. But those people are not the marjority in my exsperiance. I have had people walk in with items that were parked in a cigarbox for years that cost hundereds even thousands of dollars and asked for 10 or a hundered. Now people couls say to them selfs They only asked for 10 so why should I give them more and mind you i´m human and greed is part of being human so I can say that the tought crossed my mind when I started the buisness. But then I would always remeber the lady that had a box full of coins in a flee marked and one of those coins was a gold coin. She was asking for a few bucks I told her what she had and bought the coin for a considereble higer ammount. That was my first step into Karma wich I have belived in ever since. I´m going on a rant here and most likely not making alot of sense. What i´m trying to say it people make mistakes and that is allright but if you are a man enought to correct them you will have a smoother sayling trough life.
Thats a great find Siggi. It's nice to see stuff like this going to a genuie, and good person! Congrats!
fantastic discovery siggi, just like my ottoman gold coin from earlier this year it proves that there are still great finds to be had..........
Merc Have you ever heard of Cherrypicking? That is superior knowledge used to obtain a scarce piece for less than usual, ie less than you feel it is worth. There is nothing wrong with that. PS: Congrats, Siggi on a great find
