Here is something I have noticed... It could be complete coincidence or there could be something to it. I have been having some decent luck with the graders lately with coins like Ike dollars. These coins are very dependent on making the right grade... usually MS67... but MS66's can be worth it sometimes as well. This is really a low downside move for me personally. If the coins MS65 they are still worth my cost and grading fees... but of course I want the big money coins. You might remember this coin. http://www.cointalk.com/t155416/ This coin is a top pop piece with a population of 10 pieces and none higher. This is a SCARCE and expensive coin for an Ike. I sent this coin in as the only Ike dollar in a modern coin order. Did this coin get the grade because it was the only one in the order? If I sent this coin in a lot of other Ikes... would it have graded the same? I have had orders recently that I KNOW are monsters... but all but a coin or 2 fall a grade or sometimes 2 short... Is their something to be said about a grader looking at ONE nice example of a certain coin series rather then 10. Do submissions of multiple coins of the same series get suppressed because they don't want to look as if they are grading loose? Thoughts?
I think it's a double edged sword. And which way it cuts probably depends a lot on the coins sent in. Example - send in 6 Ikes. If 5 of them should grade 65 and only 1 should grade 67, then getting that 67 should be no problem. But if all 6 should grade 66 or 67, then it is unlikely or less likely that any will get the 67. I guess what I'm saying is if 1 star easily outshines the rest then that star will get the attention. But all 6 stars shine equally or roughly so, then it is more likely for none of them to get the attention.
I know all of the thought behind "condition census" and the like, but doesn't it make you feel a little sad deep down that coin collecting in some areas has devolved into psychological gaming of TPGers? I am not saying anything about your post Dutchman, you are a dealer and need to maximize yoru returns, just a general observation. I am just going back to my dirty old ancients and try to keep TPGers out of my sandbox. I got kicked out of the US coin sandbox long ago by them.
The sad part is that you have to "play the game" in order to get the correct grade. That's what I think Matt is saying. He isn't looking to get a grade that he doesn't deserve, but rather to get the coin accurately graded in a TPG holder so that he can sell it (which is how he makes his living). It's one thing trying to play games to get a coin over-graded and another thing entirely to have a hard time getting the correct grade and having to play games in order to get that. BTW - nice analogy, Doug!
Well, whatever you need to do to maximize profits, don't put all the MS66 coins up on an auction site at one time. As a bidder, I like when people do that. Hey, cheaper coins.
