is this doubling on the California quarter? you can actually see so much details on the second impression.. thanks for you help
Sorry to say, but it's machine doubling. I had hundreds of them. You can always tell if it is machine doubling, also known as mechanical doubling or strike doubling, by the flat, shelf-like appearance of the image. If it had been true hub doubling, the secondary image would be rounded like the contour along the edge of Muir's face. Chris
It was fun looking for it. I was searching several bags I had ordered from the Mint, and I noticed a few coins that had a slight depression in that same spot. I knew that it was probably a subsurface fracture on the die, and when this occurs, the surface of the die bulges outward a little and causes a depression on the surface of the coin. When it finally gives way, you end up with a filled die break like this. I was hoping that I would find others, but this is the only one I found. Chris
