Is this an error?? Please help!

    is this doubling on the California quarter? you can actually see so much details on the second impression..

    Sorry to say, but it's machine doubling. I had hundreds of them. You can always tell if it is machine doubling, also known as mechanical doubling or strike doubling, by the flat, shelf-like appearance of the image. If it had been true hub doubling, the secondary image would be rounded like the contour along the edge of Muir's face.

    I agree with cpm9ball ...machine, or strike, doubling. I keep any I find too, I like 'em! lol

    It was fun looking for it. I was searching several bags I had ordered from the Mint, and I noticed a few coins that had a slight depression in that same spot. I knew that it was probably a subsurface fracture on the die, and when this occurs, the surface of the die bulges outward a little and causes a depression on the surface of the coin. When it finally gives way, you end up with a filled die break like this. I was hoping that I would find others, but this is the only one I found.
