Has anyone has bought coins directly from the Canadian Mint? Where you happy with the items you recieved and the process of buying from them? I am interested in getting a coin from the Canadian Mint for my daughter, $3 Sterling Silver Gold Plated Coin - Barn Owl (2010). She was born in 2010, and her nursery was decorated with owls/forest theme and I have volunteered with helping rehabiliating hawks and owls in the past, so it is a good fit as a coin to put away for her. Has anyone ordered this item, some of the reviews meantioned problems with the plating, any opinions out there?
I bought the their 1999 and 2000 Millennium quarter sets from them. The Royal Canadian Mint was releasing monthly quarter designs. This was 11+ years ago, but their service was fine, well packaged, very decent shipping time and charges. I would hope that they have maintained their level of service! Good Luck! Steve
The Mint has a great sales program and a large ready inventory of most anything that you want. The only problem is "price" You can pick up almost any Mint product, through Coin Shows or mail/internet orders, for 50-70% of the issue price. The mint sells only at the issue price or higher. I would estimate that over 90% of all the non-circulating legal tender coins that the Mint issues or HAS issued, immediately fal in price rapidly, so they are at nearly 50% of issue after 3 years. That has not held true for silver issues, only because the price of the base metal has escalated so much. All silver issues will sell for essentially scrap silver price. There have previously been some great wildlife issues, including owls and eagles, etc .. I think in the 50 cent series'. Check J&M or Gatewest to see what their prices are for anything to do with the MInt. As a last resort, pay the Mint price from them. Here is an Ebay auction (secondary market) for the 50 cent set: http://cgi.ebay.com/2000-STERLING-S...310?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item3f0954b27e
