Sorry no pics.. However, I have found 2 Jefferson 1990 D nickles over the past 2 years of roll searching nickles. That are missing the "FS" initials. Is this a common error,or one that I should continue to seek out while roll searching. Any collector value?
Since the initials are on the original model they can't be left off. They are raise don the coin so they are incuse in the die. So there are only two ways they could be missing. Either the dies was overpolished and the initials were polished off, or the initials filled with "grease" so they couldn't strike up. A a rule neither an over polished die, or a "grease" filled die errorbrings much if any premium.
Cool, Errors none-the-less...I came across two other roll searchers that have found a 1990 D Jefferson nickle sans D one from Kemtucky and the other from Texas. So they are out there (nickles) if they ever become popular to seek out than I have two! Maybe more..
I did say "As a rule". Frankly I wouldn't pay more for a three legged buffalo than a couple dollars as a curiosity. Same goes for a 22 plain cent, two feather buffalo, broken nose mercury dimes, missing initial walkers or Kennedys etc. They aren't an error or a variety, just a late die state where the die should have been retired. Earlier coins from the same die aren't worth a premium.
