There's nothing wrong with the tilt in the mintmark. It's the letters in the mintmark themselves that look wrong, as if they were made from a different font. The letters in the OP's coin look too round; the CC mintmark that you illustrated, like all genuine CC mintmarks I've ever seen on a Morgan dollar, features letters that are a little bit elongated.

I suspect a bad mint mark also from the photos, but so hard to make determinations. Doesn't match the mintmarks in my VA&M encyclopedia.

What you bought was a piece of silver at spot price,. If you think this Pawn Guy is going to let anyone take him , guess again. These guys know the birth rights to every speck of dust in their stores.

I too have a Morgan... Its an 1888o I found metal detecting... Don't think it's a hot lips, but it certainly looks FINE. As for value, is it worth as much as a CC? I wouldn't think so, but figured I would at least ask.

Than I stand corrected. But honestly, this is the first time in my 50 + years in this field, I've ever heard of a pawn broker being taken like this. Congrats on your good fortune.

Honestly i think it was just a mistake prob because its in horrid condition or i know his son works there too andmay be less experienced. but ive gotten alot of solid morgans there most of which were heavily toned. But all in all i just think he bought a collection of morgans for dirt cheap put them in a tube for silver dollars and just made double or mor off his money spent....plus really how much of a score really was it $200? If it were a mint example idunderstand your argument. Do u think he checks each coins for vams too? As i saidits pretty much just jewelry in there with some odds and ends like hummels and coins. If youd like i can give you the name for anyone living near boston ma. He always gets coins prob from crooks buthe gets them.

An 1880-O is a common date and in that grade is only worth melt. Jut so you know, some CC Morgan's are fairly common and other mints can be worth more. For instance, take the OPs 1893-CC. 1893 is a key date for Morgan's (all 4 mints) and the CC is the second most valuable 1893...but the 1893-S is by far the most valuable.
