Hey everyone. I know this is a stupid question and I just can't seem to come up with the answer. I am fairly new to this stuff, but I was wondering, what causes the raised part on a coin from a die chip? If part of the die breaks off, how does it result in a raised part on the coin? Can someone help me understand this or direct me to a site that explains it? Thanks so much and sorry for a stupid question y'all have probably answered a thousand times.

The image of the coin is in reverse on the die. So everything raised on the coin is incused on the die. When the die "chips" or breaks a piece of the metal is now missing and when it strikes a planchet to make the coin, the metal flows into that void which appears raised on the coin.
