Ok so I went to the bank today and decided I wanted two rolls, one of quarters and one of Halfes. I went through the quarters and got about 20 more of the state quarters I needed. I went through the halfes and all were JFK's with the exception of a JFK Bicontinental which I will be keping because Ive never seen one lol. Anyway is there any special JFK's I should look for? Im really not interested in silver, which is good since none of these contain silver. Thanks! Augustine1992
Augustine, Here's what I keep, for what it's worth: Anything silver - (1964 and back is 90%, 1965-1970 is 40%) - (you might not be interested in it, but the money you make off it can buy you coins you ARE interested in.) Anything proof - will have that super noticeable shine, plus the S mintmark Anything 1987 or 2002 to present - these weren't released for circulation, so they have lower mintages Anything odd or cool - commemoratives, errors, nice toning, and anything you don't recognize - just might be worth something. Either post on here or look it up in Cherrypicker's. Anything in really nice shape - I'm really picky here. I've probably only kept $100 face from the $25,000 or so I've searched through in my life. Hope that helps! ~benjamin
darn, the first year of no silver was 1971? I got 4 1971 halfes in my first roll. Will all proofs have a S mintmark?
Believe so. But you should be able to tell the difference, regardless of how circulated they are, just by the finish.
well thanks for the help, I picked out a few of the ones I decided to keep and now im gonna roll em back up and go back to the bank and get more!
Correct me if I am wrong (ironic the guy correcting someone else may need to be corrected himself), but I thought it was the 2002-Present Kennedy Halves that were the ones not released into circulated and those were a portion the ones to keep...? -Brian
You're exactly right. I keep anything from 1987, and anything from 2002 to present. If you look up the mintage figures in those years you'll notice they're much lower for those years. I usually find an average of 5 per box (although one box yielded almost a full roll of 2003...)
I search a box a week and I keep the proofs, any silver and I always check the 1974 d for doubled die. I have found 2 in the last two weeks and 8 in the last two years. Heavily circulated they are still worth a couple bucks. I found a 2011 proof couple weeks ago.
