I have a 1924 Coronet Head Large cent that a purchased this week. I feel the coin is in EF condition and thinking about sending it too NCS to be graded but I have noticed in the sunlight there is green on the reverse. When I bought the coin it was in a cardboard flip and there was green on the plastic holder. I know this is called a PVC (polyvinyl Chloride) contaminate. My question is by having the coin conserved will it effect the value of the coin? Again this is just a surface contaminate at this time the coin has not been damaged. I have been told if I don't have the PVC removed it will in time corrode the coin! I would like some advice on what I can do I have never sent a coin to be graded or Conserved.

    Sorry for misspelling Conservation.

Get your self a small glass jar, Pure acetone and some distilled water. Fill the clean glass jar about 1/2 inch deep with the acetone. let it soak for about 1 hr rinse with distilled water. repeat as necessary. No it will not hurt the value if you catch it in time.

Are you sure its PVC though and not Verdigris?

What is verdigris? How would I know if it is?

It appears to be verdigris, corrosion of the copper. Rinsing in acetone and then putting into a protective holder will stop the activity where it is, which isn't too bad as far as I can tell. The only product I would use if you want to pursue removing it is Verdi-care by Bad Thad. You can search for threads on the product, using the search box in the blue menu bar above.
