Can someone help me determine what this coin is? I studied in the USSR in 1989 and it was in that group of coins I brought back but I can't determine if this is old cyrillic lettering or what. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
It does not look like gold and the "coin" appears to be cast. (Note what appears to be casting bubbles above the double-headed eagle.)
you can read Poluska at the center the coin seems to be a 1/4 kopek or poluska struck in the early 1700 by peter the great. having said that it could well be a modern reproduction or a numismatic counterfeit
Indeed. It does read "Polushka" (ПОЛУШКА). But that said, can't make out what it says underneath. As far as it being counterfeit, it's difficult to assess either way.
The 'coin' claims that it's a 1700 polushka which is 1/4 kopek. Clearly not genuine unfortunately. If it is genuine, it's worth quite a fair bit.
Thanks for your feedback! Is there a way you can tell it is fake? Just for future refrence? I bought this and several other 'vintage" coins at flea markets in Leningrad during 1989. Any tips? Much appreciated!
Here is Basok's site - a dealer that sells Russian coins: http://www.rustypennies.com/catalog/imperial_coins.html Prices are quite realistic, not too high and not too low. Feel free to post more photos and I can write briefly what you got there.
