I did the best I could with these pictures of this 1929 Mercury dime. It is FSB. I know the pictures aren't ideal. What do ya'll think?

Id like to find a local dealer who can send it off to PCGS for not a crazy fee.

There seems to be some wear on the bands. Perhaps a poor strike. AU-58 or MS-60

I dont think it is AU I think my picture quality is just not good enough to show the bands better. I got this coin from JJ Teaparty and they had is graded as CH BU. Looking online it says CH bu range is MS63-MS64. I personally think this coin could get an MS65, but I don't have near enough experience to grade MS coins accurately.

Personally, I'd save my money and not submit it for grading. If JJ Teaparty sold it as CH BU that pretty much means in their opinion it's not worth paying the submission fees.

I'm goin to say 63 at the highest. That long mark/toning by the Y in LIBERTY is very distracting and unnatractive.

And I see what Ripley is talking about. the middle bands look flatter to me than the other bands.
    Maybe just the pictures though.

I agree with GDJMSP. If you are buying from a person that grades/submits, and they sold this once as CH BU, it is likely less than MS65 (at least in their opinion). I estimated MS63, maybe MS64. Always hard to tell from average pictures, but if you don't feel it has a good shot at MS65, its probably not worth submitting. I would suggest finding a reputable person in your area (ask around about shops) and ask for their opinion. There are some good people our there that might help you out. Or go to a local coin club show and ask around. Remember...opinions are like...well you can finish that however you want!

Thanks for the help. The reason I would like to send it off is to have a graded MS dime in my collection to assist me in grading raw dimes. I think I recall reading that some local shops can send out customer coins to PCGS for a fee much less than PCGS would charge. Is this true?

I think it is full banded with hardly any noticeable wear. The only thing holding it back from being MS-65 is the corrosion or bubbling near the ' W' and ' Y ' on the obverse. IMHO it is MS-64.

No it isn't true. Not unless they are sending a large bulk submission. Typically using a dealer to submit coins is easier than doing it yourself but it costs more because you also have to pay the dealer for his time.

what is that in the fields to the right?

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

From the photos, it looks like an AU 58 to me.

It's hard to see if there's rub from the photos. In hand, inspect the cheek, hair to the right of her face, leading edge and upper right of the wing. Nothing? MS. Something? AU.

An MS63 should have little or no abrasion. MS65 should have no abrasion or contact marks (naked eye).

Based on the obverse I would guess MS60. The right field keeps it below MS63.

I'd say MS-60. Whatever that is in the lower right obverse field is distracting enough to keep it from going higher. Otherwise a nice coin.

Not worth grading imo. What is in the field to the right on the obv? As is its a solid 62. Perhaps a little acetone would help remove that gunk in the fields. Nice coin for an album.
